If I cut off my Dish Netowrk account, what programming in the FTA category would I still receive? I have 110, 119 and 61.5 dishes. I assume my OTA module on the 6000 would still operate as long as I had the dishes locked on a satellite.

Actually in the last tech chat, they talked about how the OTA module on the 6000 will NOT work if you don't have any programming.

It has been my understanding that you just need a sat signal to enable the OTA tuner.

I read somewhere on one of these boards that if you unplug your satellite receiver from the dish before you call in to cut off service and then wait a while to reconnect to the dish that your receiver will still get the old programming you had before . Something about the receiver not getting the disconnect hit from the satellite since it's not hooked up to the dish. Has anyone else had this happen?

it doesn't take long after you hook it back up to lose your programming!

I de-activated a 5000 a couple months ago. I did the disconnect and then a reconnect later and lost all the channels within a couple of days.

I get NASA and Sky Angel (262) FTA along with the barker channels.

The 6000 WILL work if the sat signal is locked on; u don't need any subscription to anything to get ur OTA channels. The guy in the TechChat was flat out lying (or misinformed) when he said it was required to get a subscription.

Purposely misleading, perhaps?

Well if the 811 is going to be around $299.00 , will the 6000 still be worth the price at $449.00? Seems like a cheap price for ability to receive your over the air channels with the 811. And yes I am sure the tech guy was lying about getting the ota channels without a subscription.

If the 811 really hits the market at $299, then don't expect to be able to sell your 6000 for more than $120. Maybe on the ebay early if people don't flood it, and buyers are unaware of the 811's existence.

You can run the OTA channels through your 6,000 without a subscription. You just need a satellite feed running into it for everything to work property.

My showroom display is hooked up like this, since I use it to demo the local PBS feed.

TV Japan occasionally goes FTA for a newscast or other feature.
All DISH freeviews (that I know of) are FTA.

You can point a dish at the 91 slot and see newscasts FTA on
an ExpressVu barker channel (most mornings and evenings).
ExpressVu freeviews are scrambled (for existing subscribers only).

Two price hikes ago, I dropped my 2nd IRD (it was rarely used as a way to tape one channel while watching another). I disconnected it, but occasionally reconnected it to see if it still got programming. I got a couple of months worth of sneak viewing before the cutoff happened (before the cut-off a warning message told me that it was about to make a change). Aftwer the cutoff, it gets all the "barkers", NASA, Angel One, and half of the shopping channels (hence the programming an unsubbed unit receives has been called "America's Top 3 shopping channels". Actually the only shopping chanels you don't get are HSN, QVC, and Shop NBC. You also get all the free previews including the daily TV Japan freebies if you have a 61.5. Also, if the free preview happens to be NBALP or NHLCI you get all the games except for any that are blacked-out in your area (evidently the blackout data of your former subscription remains loaded in the IRD's memory after it gets the "hit").

If channels are still in the gray, but you get the "this is a subscription channel..." you can still see these channels by going to 262 (Angel One) then using the channel up (or down) on the remote. This unlocks all "in the gray" channels. If OTOH, the channels turn red, they are locked out until you sub the unit again.
