View Full Version : A couple of questions about Dish
I'm a current DirectTV sub whose comittment has expired and am considering options for HD DVRs. I've started to look a Dish and had a couple of questions.
I have two HD TVs, but could live with SD for one of the TVs. How good is the "480i" SD output by the Dish DVRs compared to DirectTV's SD service?
How is the SD delivered to the other TV? Can I use a RG-6 cable to route the SD signal to the bedroom TV? Is the signal QAM?
What model is Dish likely to give me? How stable is the software?
Is there any risk that if Tivo wins their suit that the DVR I get will be deactivated as part of the settlement?

How good is D* 480I, DISH is no different some channels are better than others.
Yes it can be routed over RG6 that will give the poorest video quality do you really want that on a HD set? It is standaed NTSC no qam.
The 722/722K is current new customer DVR software is pretty stable but the next release could absolutely junk your receiver. DISH has had as many bad software releases as D*.
Yes there is a risk the Judge can do anything he wants but it is doubtful a recall would happen.:):):)

The TV2 output is pretty good. We settle for it when we want to watch something we've recorded on the 722 on our bedroom TV.
SD is output through coax, no encryption; it's broadcast on a channel of your choice, usually CATV channels in the 70s.
You're most likely to get a 722k. The software's very stable, despite what Boba said above; some people have problems but overall you don't hear about the happy people.
And it's not going anywhere from the Tivo lawsuit, so don't worry about it.

RCY I have had those that have meters tell me Dish's SD signal is 544x480i where DirecTV's is 480x480i.
Personally I believe them because I use to have Dish before I had DirecTV and I kept thinking to myself that the Dish SD picture looked better now I am sure it is being back with Dish.
You should be able to use RG6.Don't know if it's QAM maybe find a user's manual online for the 722k.
I would push for the 722k.
The ViPs are not listed by what I know in the lawsuit. Now my 625 I'm operating I hear is but this 625 is such a great DVR I will take my chances.

You need to know a couple of things beyond what has been answered.
SoCal describes an area that is bigger than half the states, but then so is the LA DMA. So if you are in the LA DMA, I have seen very few complaints about technical problems with the locals from the satellite posted by LA Dish subscribers. San Diego was another story for awhile, but appears to have been solved. If you are a DirecTV subscriber, you need to know that according to the Echostar Knowledge Base (http://www.dishuser.org/) the LA HD stations offered by Dish from the satellite are:
KABC (ABC)
KCBS (CBS)
KNBC (NBC)
KTTV (Fox)
KTLA (CW)
KCAL (Ind)
If you love PBS or another station not listed, you won't get it in HD on Dish anytime soon.
Second, if you can get off-the-air signals, insist on getting a ViP722k with a OTA module (which you have to "buy") as you'll be able to record two OTA signals and two satellite signals simultaneously. In your situation, it is quite possible to have the installer show up with a ViP722 which has only one OTA tuner. (No, the Dish software isn't perfect, but close enough.)
