Periodically I find a desktop icon with a tilde. I can delete it. But something tells me this is not good. Any thoughts/guesses?

What is a Tilde?
If you are having any trouble with desktop/internet settings and weird icons, go here for help. I am a member there myself.

The reason I recommended this site is because that sounds like a dialer/spyware type thing. Could you post a pic of the icon?
Just in case, get Spybot S&D (spyware and adware remover)

Ok. If you need help, you are free to post at Spywareinfo forums if you want. You don't even need to register. I have been there for almost a year now, and they are pure experts on helping other clean out their PCs.
BTW, Get HijackThis (a browser anti-hijacker program) here:

I've seen this sometimes as well. I don't think it's a virus, rather more than likely it's a temporary file generated by some program. That's just a guess, though.

I've noticed it lately as well, but I see it at the root of C. I've looked at the file and among a lot of binary data, it has email addresses from my address book. I've been trying to notice when it appears after I delete it, but I haven't noticed a pattern yet.

You might want to right click on that file and go to properties. At the very least, you will be able to look at date and time information. Perhaps get a clue as to it's origin.
Had a similar file that appeared regularly on my wife's desktop. Never did figure out where it was coming from. I would delete it and it would come back. She was no help in diagnosis. She would never enven notice it there.
Haven't seen it for months now. Quite the little mystery.
