It was actually kind of brown... while he was being nostalgic over the "old" set.

My recordings of both the Daily Show and Colbert report, channel 249 over DirecTV, did not appear to be in HD.

My recordings of both the Daily Show and Colbert report, channel 249 over DirecTV, did not appear to be in HD.

My recordings from the 10PM and 10:30PM CST shows of both shows are in HD, at last 16:9, for Monday and Tuesday.

After some further investigation ...

My manual recordings M-F 10-10:30 and 10:30-11:00 had been programmed so long ago (before there was a COMHD), that they were still on 249 COM, not 249 COMHD.

... D'oh!

Sepia tone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sepia_tone#Sepia_toning), if you want to get specific about the shade of brown.
