View Full Version : D* Install alongside cable questions

We are considering making the switch from Comcast back to DirecTV now that they carry Indianapolis & Lafayette locals for the Tippecanoe County, IN market, but we wish to keep Comcast High speed internet in the process.
The cable enters the house and is split 4 ways in the roof space.
Typically, how will a D* installer setup a multi-receiver install in a house that was previously wired for cable?
Will the installation be more than the free Professional Installation, if I require that the cable from the dish not be spliced to the existing cable that travels through the exterior wall?

The D* tech will probably run a new cable from the dish into your roof space where the existing splitter is. Now the only question is, is the cable run between your modem & the splitters a direct run? (NO other TV's or splits on it) If so, it's a piece of cake - he can just take the incoming cable from cc & connect it directly to the dedicated cable modem. He can then use the remaining cable runs for your D* receivers - if you are getting any DVR's & he's using an SWM dish, then both tuners will work just fine with the single cable runs & he'll replace the cable splitter with a special SWM splitter.
If you have a TV on that cable modem run, &/or he is NOT using SWM, then it's going to be more complicated...

I had a similar situation. The D* installer ran a line into the attic, where the cable splitter was. Since the living room is where my cable modem is, the installer ran a second line to the living room, and the original cable line remained on that splitter. All the other bedroom connections were taken off the cable splitter and put onto the D* splitter.

AND diplexers do interfere with the HD signal and CATV internet.
Expect the standard installation: surface wire to the receivers. Pulling cable inside walls is an extra. After 125 feet of cable, expect extra charges for the cable & fittings.

Thanks for all the replies, currently the cable is split thusly: 4 ways from the outside leading to 2 bedrooms, 1 game room & the living room where it is split again for a cable modem & HD-DVR (Surprisingly, I get a faster than the advertised internet connection & no dropouts in picture/sound).
I am pretty sure that I will be charged extra to have a separate cable run to my living room which is where my modem, router, media server is setup, especially as the room is on the northeast corner of the building.
I am intending to have the cable in go purely to the cable modem , Router & media server (by running an extension into the main bedroom closet.), and let the satellite installer use the 4 remaining cables to feed the recievers. But will look into the cost of running network cabling to the living room.

You are on the right track. Just make sure there aren't any hidden splitters left over from the Comcast install.
The cost for network cabling should be small and is a great DIY project.
