My father had a new dish installed today since he has now joined the HD world. I have not been over to check out the installation but he is unable to receive some channels. I asked him if it was a single coax or dual going into the receiver. He said there where two. Not sure why they did not use the single wire setup (new dish). I then asked if there where 2 B-band converters on the back of the receiver and he said no. He said the installer could not figure what was wrong. He went on the roof several times and even switched out the box with no luck. I'm thinking he has the older 5lnb dish and needs the two B-band converters. What do you guys think? If this is the case, what channels are effected?

The dish doesn't control whether or not you need B-Band Converters. What model DVR or receiver did he get? If he got an HR23, they don't need BBCs.

If the need for or the lack of BBCs were the issue, there wouldn't be too many HD channels, so maybe you can ask him which channels he isn't getting/has problems with and it might help us answer your question.

Yea, I need a refresher course. It's the multi switch thats different on the new dish. Anyway, I called him and he has an HR23 so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Which channels does he NOT receive? Are they the ones in the HD Extra pack?

I called him back and so far it says searching for satellite on channels 245 and 206. There might be more.

I'd guess dish alignment. Sounds like he needs to call for a service call and have a tech look over the installation.

I was thinking that was the problem. My dad is 70 and frustrated so I didn't even ask him to run through the sat signals. He has someone coming out tomorrow to take a look.

He gets 207 but not 206. He gets 247 but not 245. He also says when he goes to the music channels (237 as an example) it says he has to pay for it. It never said that before.

Sounds like an authorization issue. I had this problem once. Some HD channels and not others. Has DirecTV resent the authorization to the receiver?

I know he called them and of course they had him do the RBR. Not sure if they resent authorization or not. It's always a coin flip when calling customer service.

He is going to call them right now and ask them to resend authorization to the box. We shell see what happens.

This seems to happen to me when I get low signal from snow the music channels and local stations get "channel not purchased" messages or for some reason, almost every channel becomes MSNBC. It's like it get scrambled or something.

Just an update. He had a bad piece of coax from the basement to the receiver. All is well now.

RG-59 coax will fail, in "all" kaku3/5 HD install, but can run in swim install..

Hey hammerhead:
Not smart putting your email address on a public forum like this. Spammers harvest addresses by automagically sifting all posts on the forum and collect any string that contains an "@". Why don't you edit it out quick, quick, unless you really need some viagra.
