This surprised me a lot.
While it's all well and good to interview minority candidates, where do you draw the line? Is it really appropriate to fine a President for not interviewing minority candidates? Absolutely not. Perhaps a better solution would have been the NFL giving the team some sort of revenue kick if they hired a minority coach (like, say, an extra cut of the network payouts), but to punish a guy for hiring the guy he wanted right off the bat? Insane!
I hope football doesn't go the same road as baseball in terms of these things. Honestly, with a move like this, Tagliabue looks a lot like Selig.
Why "must" they interview a black for any coaching job that comes available ? Maybe they should be totally insane about it and simply hire the best man for a particular coaching job, black or white

Well there is a rule in the NFL that you "must" interview a minority candidate. They had to put the rule there because they were in trouble with the government for not hiring minorities a couple years ago. The hope was that teams would take care of this but, it would appear not. There are plenty of great minority coaches out there and none of them seem to get a chance except for retreads. I firmly believe that Detroit hired the best man for the job, but I just can't imagine that there are only 2-3 black head coaches in the NFL.
