Having been with Directv for 15 yrs, I have been eligible for a free receiver upgrade for quite sometime. I have been using Directivo series 2 DVR's (6 of them) for many years and they are dying one by one. I have had them replaced under my protection plan and get R15 receivers for replacements. I am not very happy with them. but.......

Since my last series 2 is now showing signs of dying off, I decided to take advantage of the upgrade and what I thought would be an R16. It arrived today and upon opening the box I found another R15. I called customer service and was told they had no control as to what would be sent, and that there was absolutely no difference between the two. I did not ask to speak to their customer detention department.

Now, I know that they both have the same recording capacity and their menu functions are basically the same. What I want know is are the R16's faster in response to commands and do they have other features that the R15 does not have. (I LIKE my Directivo DVR's.)

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

There are only two differences between the R15 and R16:

- The R16 is black while the R15 is silver.
- The R16 is SWM-compatible while the R15 is not, but given you already have the proper cabling, that's not an issue for you.

We install R15s all the time, for both new and existing customers. DirecTV recycles working receivers back into the system, and installers get what they get. We may go weeks getting 90% R15s, forcing us to hold back R16s for SWM jobs only. Then we may get nothing but R16s the next week. It just depends on what DirecTV has available.

As a customer, you don't get to choose; DirecTV considers these models to be equal and reserves the right to provide either one to you at any time. Given that these are leased and feature-equivalent, there's no real cause to get one over another. There are no performance differences and they use the same software.
