Been trying to upgrade our existing standard receiver to a HD receiver at no cost to me, and so far DTV is not allowing this. They want me to pay a $50 deposit on the standard receiver, $19.95 s/h, and $99 for the HD receiver. Anyone had any luck recently on upgrading? I have been a customer for 3 months.
Since you're only been a customer for 3 months you're probably SOL for trying to get any deals on new hardware. I don't understand your comment about the deposit on the SD receiver, you have a SD receiver now and they want you to pay to turn it in for a HD upgrade?
Anyway, if you still want to get a HD receiver might was well just go to BestBuy and buy it there, still $99+tax and then you'll guarenteed a new receiver, going through DirecTV might be a refurb.

Yup, they want $50 to make sure I return the std receiver.

OK, so that's just a security deposit, right? If so, I assume they would issue a $50 credit when they received it. Seems reasonable.
After only three months (and a long commitment still remaining) I doubt they'd be aggressive about giving you a better deal. Getting a bunch of upgrade deals every two years (driving a bargain once I'm no longer under contract) seems to be the way to get the most for the money.
Not a $50 deposit
Additional $50 fee

For the most part, you aren't going to get any kind of deal on equipment upgrades within the first 6 months of becoming a customer. You had the oppertunity to get the equipment you needed in the first place, just 3 months ago, and didn't do so then, so DirecTV is going to want to wait a while and recoup a good chunk of their hefty investment in you before they'll even consider another discount.
What they've offered you is a standard deal, and really, it's pretty decent in the first place.

If Costco is an option to you, hd receivers are $69 there, if they still have them. The one near me only stocks the dvrs.

I've been trying to upgrade to and hd dvr from a dvr in my living room. And a hd receiver in my bedroom for a month now. They want to charge about 300 bucks. I've always paid my bill on time and been with them over 2 years now. this also includes a new dish setup.
