A few of my thoughts about my PVR 721 and DishNetwork.

I got my PVR 721 a little over a month ago..... Initial setup was a pain until the software downloaded.... Also it has had a few quirks along the way...... Operation was Sluggish for a few days....... Missed a few Timer Events Etc. But overall I am very pleased with the 721.... After all, anyone that has ever operated a computer knows that software will always be a pain and will never be perfect.... Sure the 721 needs a software update and I am looking forward to the fix's and added features in the next update...... No Doubt, Dish uses their customers to help out with Research & Development in their new products..... But that's done throughout the electronics industry..... I could go on and on about problems I encountered with 1st generation c-band equipment ... but I wont.... Who better to find the bugs and suggest improvement's than those of us who use the equipment? Sure, for the price, it should operate flawless out of the box...... but that's Not Real World..... If we waited for a flawless pvr receiver to hit the market, the 501, 508, and 721 or future receivers like the 921 would never be available.

I do think Dish has a lot of improving they need to do when it comes to product customer service. Hey DISH when you have a technical problem, alert your CSR's immediately and let them tell the customers the truth...... Tech Forum is great BUT it really got under my skin when in the recent Tech Forum Mark Jackson ROLLED HIS EYES because Dave Kummer talked about future plans to spin down the hard drive, thus extending the life of the hard drive on Dish PVR's..... Hey Mark, do you feel you have to try and hide the fact that hard drives are failing on your pvr's because they run 24/7? it's just common sense.... I feel sorry for Dave Kummer..... There's a guy that tries to do the right thing and I bet he hits walls everywhere he turns.....

OK, Im done for now..... Get a PVR you will LOVE IT !!!! but don't expect it to be perfect.... It never will be.... REAL WORLD Thinking.

Oh yeah, and now you can pay a new fee with your new DVR also to go with your not so perfect DVR.

On the newer line of DVRS (510, 522,921 etc). See the earlier thread about the 510 and dvr fee .

Hi MobileBay and welcome to DBSTalk.Com :hi:

Don't worry, you will not have a PVR fee on your new 721. Enjoy!

New fee?

NO new fees for any PVR equipment purchases bought before 9/1/03. No fees for America's Everything Pak subscribers.

Doh... well, I'm glad there's no fee for the 721. That was one of the defining reasons that I bought it -- no PVR charge.

My local cable company wants me to subscribe to digital cable AND pay a $10/mo PVR fee (coming to well over $60/mo for basic service), DirecTV charges that pesky $5 unless you subscribe to the max package... over $80/mo I believe. So E* had the whole deck when it came to wanting a PVR. If they start charging a fee, though... yeesh.

Does that 9/1 date apply to new 721's purchased after that date, or just the new model PVRs coming out?

Do I keep my tv on 24/7 or my computer on 24/7? I would not think most people do so why have the hard drive on that long too?
