I believe I read once that the confidentiality agreement for Amazing Race specified a fine of $10 million. Cast and crew have to sign that.

Just saw a commercial for it. I don't think it was in HD, but the commercial was at least widescreen. That will help at least.

I think it was just the CBS promo department stretching and/or cropping the footage (so that the promo wouldn't look "jarring" in the middle of promos for HD shows). My guess is that "Amazing Race 16" will be broadcast in 4:3, same as the previous versions.

A friend of mine was on the Bachelorette and he was not allowed to talk but based on not seeing him for a while you knew some he made it pretty far.

That wouldn't work on AR as they sequester all the "losers" to Elimination Station until the end of the show, so everyone is gone for the same amount of time.
