Thought maybe this needed it's own thread. The official announcement is supposed to come on Monday, January 25th (beta testers will also be free to discuss the player then - No, I'm not one), but the specs are already available.

Things missing on this newer, lower priced unit (MSRP of $289.00)
Thing missing from the BDP-80
1. Glow in the dark remote, No Back-lit
2. DVD 24p Conversion
3. IR In/Out Ports
4. RS-232 Remote Control
5. Analog Output: Shared with 7.1ch
6. Cheaper plastic faceplate
7. "System-on-Chip" with Custom Firmware ?
8. For home theaters with large screens - (Not Recommended)
I'm sure it will be an excellent player, but still a bit of a niche unit for those that need a universal player (DVD-A, SACD, etc.) and/or 7 channel analog.
For those that just need a good blu ray/DVD player, $300 might be a bit steep.

They certainly cut out some key things to get to the lower price point. That makes then comparible to other BD players now, but also still higher in price.
I bet the video performance is still really good though. Which will set it apart for the higher end crowd.
Sucks they cut IR though. I never have understood why that is only on high end items...seems so cheap to implement.

The BD performance should be the same, but yes, the SD performance should be great. It all comes down to how much SD someone watches, the size of their display, the distance they sit from it, and how much of a difference there really is.
BTW, early reports say that the SD upconversion of the BDP-80, while very good, isn't quite as good as the BDP-83 and is equaled by a few other players (i.e. Pioneer 51FD, Samsung P2550), not counting the many new players that are about to be released.

They make a point to say it is "almost as good as the BD83"....but not the same.
I could make a case that 3-4 other players fall into that same category - all at a lower price point.

A good review....but doesn't provide any in-depth video comparisons with its big brother....likely that will come in the weeks ahead.

Very true, we will just have to see what the media comes up with.
I never thought this was going to be the cheapest player on the market and it definitely will have others that come very close in performance for less.
