11-27-01, 12:14 PM
DirecTV 4S, a Boeing 601HP satellite built for the small dish provider, lifted off from Arianespace's launch facility in South America Monday night.

As of press time late Monday night, things appeared to be operating smoothly aboard the spacecraft. An Ariane 44LP rocket carried the satellite.

The satellite was built by Boeing Space and Communications. DirecTV 4S is the sixth Boeing-built satellite launched this year and the 61st Boeing 601 spacecraft launched to date, the satellite manufacturer said.

DirecTV 4S will be stationed with other DirecTV satellites at 101 degrees. The spacecraft will help the DBS provider deliver additional local channels, including any local channels covered under must-carry rules, and strengthen redundancy of its in-orbit fleet.
