View Full Version : Two Questions Re: HD Upgrade

I'm planning to upgrade my receiver (I've currently got a 322) to an HD DVR next week and I just have a few questions before I call.
First, I have a Dish 500 antenna and the Classic Silver 200 programming. Looking at the list on Satellite Guys, it looks like all the HD channels I care about are on 110 or 119, so I shouldn't have to upgrade my antenna - is this correct?
Second, assuming I don't need to upgrade the antenna, is replacing the receiver as simple as unplugging the old one, plugging in the new one, and calling to deactivate the old receiver/activate the new receiver?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Care about and whats in the package are two different things. Dish will have to give you a new dish, if there are HD channels on one of the other birds in th package you get. Eastern Arc is different so there will be others giving explaining all that your will really need.

in regards to activating receiver, you just call in or can also do it on the web if you log into your account.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I looked at the "Silver" list on the Dish HD Programming page (which is what I'll be getting), and checked "The List" at Satellite guys, it looks like the HD channels I'd be adding are mostly on 110, which my Dish currently picks up, along with 119. (I'd post links to what I'm talking about, but apparently I need 5 posts first).
It looks like everything in the package should be available. I had called Dish Network to see if I would need a new dish and they told me that I wouldn't, I just wanted to verify.

I'd get either a 61.5 dish or whatever (129 - probably not so good in NY) for the western arc. Then you should get most of your Classic Silver channels in HD, as well as the SD versions.

Last time I checked, Dish would not activate a package unless you could see all the SAT locations required for any channels that might be in that package, whether you want to watch them or not.
The reason?
You might say you're ok today... but then a month from now you call and ask why you can't get some new channel that was added to a different SAT, and then you complain you should have had the SAT already because you've been paying, etc. etc.
So Dish is highly unlikely to set you up unless you have a dish pointed at all the relevant locations.

OK, that works. I was going to upgrade either way, I just figured I would save myself having to wait around for a guy to show up and install stuff, if I could.
Thanks to everybody who chipped in with answers. Much appreciated.
