If you have a DVD or blu-ray player, I suggest you run a calibration disc. This will help to adjust the display settings to your liking. If you know your TV model number, you can also look for some calibration settings to get you started here:

When I asked which one, I was asking which 42" Vizio 120Hz LCD TV? There are several, and they are different. If it is the same one I have (see sig), I can give you a good starting point, as I continually adjusted mine for the first 2-3 weeks of owning it. PQ can go from excellent to woefully awful on that set with the wrong settings.

We need the exact model, they probably have 5-10 different 42" models by now.
Beyond that, here are 2 sites that might have some good baseline settings to try:

Okay, that's the same TV I have. Here are my settings:
Brightness 54
Contrast 53
Saturation 50
Hue -3
Sharpness 0
Backlight 85
Contrast Enhancement - Off
Color Stretch - Off
Color Temp - Custom
DCR - Off
Red - 52
Green - 50
Blue - 46
Noise Reduction - Off
Fast Response - Off
Smooth Motion - Off
The backlight will vary based on the brightness of your viewing area. Mine is in a very bright room, hence the high backlight setting. The absolute most important thing you can do is to turn off the Smooth Motion, it's awful
Let me know if you have any quesitons.

If you really want to do it right, get it ISF-calibrated.
