AT&T is reportedly in negoiation to sell the broadband operations to AOL by the end of the year. If AOL or anyone else buys it I will sign up for cable modem service since DSL is not available in my area.

It amazes me how many times AT&T have bought companies for big bucks then ran them into the ground then they sell off the remains for chump change.

You will love having a cable modem. Definitely a wise choice considering it is double the price of a dial up connection at 100 times the speed.

I have @HOME (at home none the less!) and I like it for the most part, I am concerned however as there is a rumor going around that @HOME will be forced to shut down on November 30th (they are in Bankruptcy)

AT&T sent a email to all its subs the other night telling them to backup their websites that are hosted on @HOME servers and for users to check their mail often to avoid lost mail, but the note did not actually say that the network is going down.

I hope that when I come back from my vacation on November 30th that everything is still online.

If the current crop of bankruptcies is any indication these services may increase dramatically in price before long, just to keep the remaining companies alive.

AT&T ripped me off for 5000 frequent flyer points, which I never got. Then they slammed me, and after I cancelled them they started charging me monthly access charges again. The cellular group was no better and after 5 months couldnt get that jen married me and her address changed. What a waste.... I have sent 6 requests to be permanetely removed from the phone solicit lists, they claim they have NO conrol over calls from themselves because their company is SO big...

I would be THRILLED if they went bankrupt and totally out of business.

I used to date a lady who worked for them, it was a terrible place to work too....

Well if they cut off my cable modem service on the 30th, Comcast will be surprised to hear that I'll be canceling my lifeline cable service too!

Atleast I have Starband to fall back on :)

I like my Roadrunner from TimeWarner - so far. I just don't like the idea of having to have lifeline in order to receive RoadRunner.

Yesterday I was reminded of just why I love my cable modem. Just to dispell a little of the hype, surfing is not always as "instantaneous" as the ad proclaim. Accessing servers still is limited to traffic, bottlenecks, etc. But once the connection is made, pages do load much more quickly, and where I have really noticed the difference is in downloading programs off the net. Once the connection is made, the little bits and bytes really fly. I have gotten used to downloading 20 meg files in a matter of minutes, and wondering why things were taking so long. Yesterday I downloaded an 8 meg program (in fact I downloaded it three times, plus a 2.5 meg update, trying to find the version that would work on my antiquated computer here at church). I was using a dial-up connection, with about a 42k connection. It took me approximately 25 to 30 minutes each time. Brought back memories of the first time I downloaded netscape 3 off the net (that couldn't have been more than about a 5 meg file). It took me 12 hours to download and I got disconnected at about 80% at least twice. Oh for the good old days. Yeah, right, you can have them. Cox is promising more upgrades to the system with even faster up and downloads. Give me the good new days. :)

I know what you mean Bogy. I don't miss the old days of dialup downloads. I think the top speed I ever got during a modem download was about 4K per second. With my cable modem, I get 280K!!! Norton antivirus updates take just a few seconds and any large movie file (around 20 Megs) is done before I even finish getting a glass of water.
