I found this line interesting Those figures suggest that there are about 1.7 million homes with a non-TiVo digital video recorder. Bob Scherman, editor and publisher of Satellite Business News, estimated that EchoStar had about 750,000 to 800,000 of those users.

Dish wants to gain the DVR market one way or another and the new promotion may attract new customers because of the lower DVR price and Dish is going to get their money one way or another, whether its monthly or upfront, and it seems like they are going to get it both ways if someone does not take the promotion.

The DVR fee is not all bad if they would not charge so much up front and gave existing subs a promotion as well in which will counteract this monthly charge.

I STILL find it funny that 2 weeks ago an E* CSR tried to use "we have no subscription fee" as a reason for me to stay with them.

Two weeks ago nobody knew anything about DVR fees except the higher-ups. If you were to call in today you would probably find that the CSRs still don't know about it since the DVR510s don't even begin to ship until 8/18 & the new promos don't start until 8/24.

You can still get a PVR508 on the UPG at a reduced cost & never have DVR fees.

BTW, did you notice they referred to the Time-Warner STB as "Tivo-like?" :nono2:

They're going to hear from Tivo's legal team now!

I wonder how many people are going to jump ship to cable that has DVR after the $4.99 charge comes into effect. Perhaps they should give all existing subscribers free DVR service grandfathering the customer instead of the individual PVR unless the customer gets a 'special deal' on the hardware in which makes up for the DVR fee over the longer term.

Next thing you know the CSR is going to tell you about the DVR fee as a reason to stay since they will say they are going to support their software with this. LOL, come on.

I found it funny NOT because I feel I was lied to, it's funny cuz of the irony.
