Say what you will about DVR Fees, but in the end it always comes down to dollars and programming. Here is an example (using actual figures) showing simular packages between three providers. It is not a perfect comparison but it is as close as you can get them.

DISH (w/purchased equipment)
AT150
HBO + Starz
Locals
2 Receivers
1 DVR
Premium Extended Warranty
Total 86.94

Cablevision (Long Island) - leased equipment
Silver
HBO + Starz
Locals
2 Receivers w/remote controls
DVR - not available
Premium Extended Warranty (leased equipment)
Total 78.93

DirecTV (w/purchased equipment)
Plus Package
HBO + Starz
Locals
2 Receivers
1 Tivo
Premium Extended Warranty
Total 73.97

how did you factor in the equipment purchase price?

I didn't. It is strictly a comparison showing costs once you get set up.

Here is cable in my area for another data point:

Comcast (Portland, OR) - leased equipment
Digital Gold (Includes HBO + Starz) [$75.99]
Locals
2 Receivers w/remote controls (Additional Receiver/Remote required @[$5.00])
DVR - not available
Premium Extended Warranty (leased equipment)
Total $80.99

It's also interesting in that from my poking around it looks like DirectTV equipment costs less than Dish equipment, even for existing customers. I for one am seriously looking at DirectTV.

I am more interested in total cost of ownership.
Granted, you will have to guess how long you will use the equipment.

With the price of E* equipment, it is an important consideration
