View Full Version : Dish Network and YES
Not much has been said about Dish Network carrying YES since the spring. But since then, there have been several developments: Cablevision now carries YES, TWC is offering the YES network a-la-carte.
Even though I know Charlie has no problem being the lone holdout for adding a channel (see FSW2, ESPN-HD, etc.), I'm wondering if the deals the Yankees made with these cable operators make it more likely that YES and E* can work out some deal to fianlly get this channel on E*.
Of course I'm not holding my breath waiting for it ... :bad_nono:

I seem to remember Charlie saying something like "If Cablevision were to carry YES then we would carry YES."
So now Cablevision is carrying YES, so where is it on Dish? :)
If it's not added a-la-carte then I still say no to YES. There's no need to punish the 80-90% of E* subscribers that couldn't get it in the first place (not in NY) to subsidise the Yankees.
Damn sports teams are trearing fans like the RIAA is treating music listeners....

I doubt E* will get YES anytime soon. E* wanted to do an a-la-carte but YES said no they want to be on all the tiers. Since this would mean E* would have to pay YES for all subs whether they wanted YES and E* has frozen pricing on the lower tiers so E* said no. If E* could offer either MSG or YES as the "free" RSN and charge say $2.00 for subs that wanted both I think that would be fair. I personally do not want to pay for YES as none of the teams are of interest to me but I do watch the Rangers on MSG. If you were a Yankee,Devil or Net fan you could have Yes.
I think many sports teams are watching this dispute and if E* settles you can expect more and more teams to start their own networks and this will eventually mean the end of "free" sports.

TWC now offers YES on a modified a-la-carte basis (if you don't want YES, you get a $1 credit on your bill each month, but you have to specifcally request removal of YES). I think if Dish wanted to do an a-la-carte deal, they could, but they haven't contacted YES. YES obviously isn't going to talk to them about a deal, so it's up to Schwimmer, and the only two sports he likes are cricket and soccer.

Actually you are dead wrong on this. Mr. Steinbrenner himself nixed the Ala carte Deal that Dish and Yes had come to an arrangement on at the last possible moment. Terms of the deal were that Dish was to bear the total cost of Uplinking and collecting of fees for those that wished to subscribe ala carte, all collected fees would be turned over to YES, Dish was to add absolutely no mark up for themselves. Dish rates wouldn't have gone up for those that are not interested in the Yankees, sounded like a win, win for Fans and non Fans.
Steinbrenner wanted more guaranteed paid subs and dollars, Dish dropped the issue like a hot potatoe and rightly so.
I don't want to subsidize sports fans local rights and not be able to get the programing. What is to stop lots of other Major league teams and markets from doing the same thing. I as well as many others don't want that Genie out of the bottle.

Time Warner and Cablevision are still the big fishes in New York with more leverage there.
Once Comcast, RCN and smaller systems are offered alacarte deals, Echostar will jump for a similar deal.

You are right on the first part to an extent. Cablevision and TWC offer YES on an a-la-carte basis. To the best of our knowledge, Dish hasn't contacted YES regarding the a-la-carte issue since Cablevision and TWC negotiated these new deals. While YES did decline Dish's offer of a-la-carte prior to this, as far as we know YES and Dish haven't spoken since Cablevision signed onto YES.

Dish will have to work something out with YES if they plan to offer MLB Extra Innings next year.
I can't imagine a sports pak missing it's primary team.

Dish is not carrying the Royals Sports Television Network as well and I have only seen about 10 games this season. Not to mention the Royals are on ESPN tonight and RSTN blacked it out.....
Ah... the all-mighty dollar speaks again
Dish Network & YES = NO!
Trust me, if something comes up, you'll hear about it. Dish won't sneak it into your channel lineup in the middle of the night.
