Yes they do.
Ever Dish PVR (Now DVR) has reseved space on it for Echostars use, part of this pace is supposed to be used for VOD service, where shows are beamed to your Hard Drive so you can watch them on a PPV basis later.
Imagine having all the Dish on Demand movies available on your Hard Drive no waiting for a movie to start and you can pause and rewind at will.
Lord knows when that service will be available though.
maybe if they sarted offering it when the dvr fee'sstart eeverybody would stop complaining so much

Maybe if they were not charging twice as much for second rate software, maybe then the complaining would stop.

I think EVERY NEW RECEIVER should be a PVR, to facilitate VOD. For people who dont want pvr the functions could be turned off leaving a stanard receiver.

Just one problem, the hard drive alone costs almost twice as much as it costs them to build a basic receiver.

Yesbut if all receivers had HD, think of the bandwidth savings on PPVs. They could triclethem down in awesome PQ while freeing up how many transponders? Wghile recivers are otherwise off.
VOD would be a hot seller every PPV ready and waiting for YOUR schedule.

I look at it this way. Why would I be happy about the DVR fee if they are going to offer VOD? They take up some of the hard drive space you can use just so that they can try to make money off of the rest to use VOD. If you do not subscribe to the DVR service then would you not be allowed to use the DVR functions during an ordered VOD movie?

We on this forum are not even close to the baseline E* customer. The basic customer could care less about VOD or DVR. They want a basic receiver or two (like the 301) and basic programming.
The basic customer wants something inexpensive and reliable. E* has done a very good job at this on the 301. Having the added cost of a HDD result in a more expensive, less reliable product.

I tell customers about PVR and they seem uninterested due to the price. Some say they wish they could have it but cannot afford it or do not want to pay for it even though its free. Now that it is not going to be free that sure will not make it easier to sell them unless they lower the upfront cost for the customer then they may actually be more likely to get the product without Dish sacrificing anymore money on the DVR products.

Yes I agree  We can debate all day about how bad or potentially good this new DVR fee is for us current subs, but for new subs this is a great deal. The only exception is the per unit pricing which will not likely be a factor with Joe six pack, most of them will be thrilled to have one DVR510 to show off to their buddies and a 301 or two for mom and the kids. It is only us enthusiast and not all of us that will want more then one DVR, personally I will be thrilled with one DVR522 to replace my old 2000 and 2700. Actually a 522 will be like having two 510's in one box with only one DVR fee and if it is the only receiver on the account $0 mirror fee.

You hope $0 additional mirror fees.

You misunderstood what I was saying. I know about the new promotion in which will give new subscribers the receiver for free but I am talking about existing subscribers and new subscribers that do not have or want to use a credit card or sign a contract for two years.
