View Full Version : Payment Change on MLBEI--Thanks D*
I had mentioned in the forum in the past that I wished D* would expand the number of payments for MLBEI and they did  It is now 6 payments instead of 4:hurah:

I saw the 6-payment offer too. It was on my last statement as there was no charge yet but it mentioned that it was upcoming. I think it said something like $31.99 X 6.
A HA ... here it is ... in the text above the bill breakdown:
IMPORTANT RENEWAL NOTICE: You are all set to enjoy another exciting season of MLB EXTRA INNINGSŪ. We are renewing you at the lowest price of 6 payments of $31.99/month. The first charge will appear on your February or March bill. Seasonal sports packages are not refundable after the season starts.

Same blackouts.
Did you expect any different? The Fox and ESPN contracts have not been altered or renegotiated. If you want the package and you understand the blackouts, then get it. If not, don't.

See, this is where you're wrong...it may be MORE blackouts, if the Fox night telecasts black out all Saturday EI games.

I could speculate, but was just relaying the info I received from mlb.tv. See, for me, the Cardinals are blacked out on mlb.tv as well as Extra Innings, but if I subscribe to the sports pak AND Extra Innings, then I can watch them on the RSN, but if I dont subscribe to EI, then the RSN is also blacked out. I dont understand it at all.
Find myself unemployed right now, but my son has offered to pay for the MLB-EI package this year. Since I've been on the renewal plan for a while now, does anyone know if DirecTV will let you pay the renwal price as a one-time payment? I don't want to pay them the season amount and they just add it as a credit and still end up with a monthly charge a couple of months from now? I just want to call and say, renew my Extra Innings right now and here is my credit card number, is this rocking the boat too much for their setup of payment?

i wouldn't think so. worse case is you could over-pay the full MLB EI amount right now to your account and you just take is a credit on your account for the next 6 months. you'll just need to keep a close eye on it, because DirecTV may have sneaky hands :)

I called and made a one time payment on my parents account for NFL ST for them as a Christmas present, and DirecTv used their current renewal price (I just had to provide DirecTv with my parents account number).

If you're really concerned with the price of MLB and simply can't afford it (my case), you might be pleasantly surprised when you call to cancel the automatic renewal. If you've been a "loyal customer," however that's determined, you might change your mind.
On the other hand, as always, be prepared to cancel if that's what you tell them. I realize that's not specific info, but that's all I'm willing to say.

They'll do that...I used that method a few times.

What a minute here.....it's cheaper to spread out the payment over 6 months?
I'd save $8.02 by paying over 6 instead of 4??

Auto-Renewal rate is $31.99 for 6 months.
I'd guess the new sub rate is $33.33 for a $199.94 total if they let you do 6 payments instead of 4?

I just checked online - it's $49.99 for 4 payments or $199.96 for 1 payment (this must have just come up as I've checked the page several times and until now it said it was out of season).

I wasn't offered the 6 month payment option when I called. I guess it is something you have to specifically ask for.

Has anyone here tried using the MLB.com feed over a ROKU player on their TV? I see the price on MLB.com is $100. $120 if you want both home and away feeds. I also see that they are supposed to have HD quality this year. If anyone here tried this last season, how was the quality?
Thanks

Does MLB show HD feeds from Toronto? And if so, was there alot of games in HD from Toronto?
I might be interested.

I did this last year and I will again this year. I was pleased overall with it. The reason I subscribe to mlb.tv instead of mlb ei is that I can watch on my laptop, or my iphone, or my tv via ROKU. The flexibility was worth it and you can be watching different games on all 3 devices (and multiple games on the computer) at the same time.
The only drawback to watching only on ROKU is that it is a little slow to change games as it has to connect to the new game. It takes about 10-15 seconds for me to switch games and I have pretty fast internet connection 5 mpbs down. The picture quality was pretty good.

I'm not renewing this year. I just can't get into a sport that allows such disparity in payrolls. I'm an Indians fan who moved to Florida 6 years ago and they're not really giving me much of a reason to watch, unless Rusell Branyan suddenly morphs into Manny Ramirez...

Yes it is Rogers. I like the announcers so on times when I am not watching the Twins I will roll to that game.

I called DTV and told them I was cancelling MLB EI because I'd be using Roku + MLB.com home & away. They immediately credited me $75 to stay with DTV. No contract renewal. May be YMMV but they offered it to me on the first call :)

I also called to cancel and they offered me the same $75 but I cancelled anyway. The MLB TV/ROKU package is better and it provides the games on line and on the iPhone -- all for the same $99 price.

I just got off the phone to cancel and was never offered the $75 credit and I've been with D* well over two years. Oh well. The games are streamed online for free these days anyhow if you know where to look. That $200 can be put to a lot better use.

I was on the phone with a CSR today trying to get Starz and Showtime removed from my line up because I oddly could not remove them online.
But then I told the CSR I was interested in MLB EI.. I told him the price was a bit out of my pocket price range. I said, I could not afford the four payment plan either. So I was offered the six month 31.99 pay plan plus an extra $5 off per month. Took the bait and bit. :eek2:

I called a week or two ago to cancel Starz/Showtime. When that was done, I asked about MLB EI and if there were any price breaks (like they did with the NFL package). I mentioned that I can watch it online for half the price, etc. No dice.
So, then I casually asked when my 2 year commitment is up (which is in April). He asked if I was planning on leaving DirecTV. I said not necessarily, but I want to keep my options open. (I am not planning on ever leaving DirecTV.)
Well, he then put me on hold and came back with "Since you are a valued customer, would $20 off a month for 6 months entice you to order the MLB package? When you take the $120 off the $200 price, it would be cheaper than paying $100 to watch online."
That worked for me.

As usual it depends on which CSR you talk too. I'm pretty sure my commitment is about up and they let me cancel EI without any mention of an offer to get me to stay. I may call back another day, but for now I think I can live without it and just stream them online.
As an alternative to MLB EI, you might consider the Roku streaming media player and an MLB.tv subscription. Because we're set to auto renew, it's only costing my wife and I $110 for the season. All games are in HD but they are highly compressed so the qulaity is not as good as DIRECTV, but still quite watchable.
One of the cool things is that you can access all the games from the season through the archive function. So if you missed yesterday's game and want to watch the exciting 9th inning, you can do that.
There are a few different models of the Roku priced from $79.99-$129.99. We have the (original) $99.99 model and love it. We use it for MLB.tv, Netflix, Amazon video on demand, and Pandora.

I had to cancel.. My wife is still unemployed, and I still can't watch any Phillies games here in metro Philly. I know it's not D*'s fault... But I was really hoping to watch the M's this year - I think they're going to surprise a lot of folks.

Well I just called and dealt with retention. They gave me the $20 off for 6 months even after the 1st CSR told me he couldn't do anything for me since the package was now removed from my system. So, looks like I have EI for $71 this year, which is cheaper than MLB.TV, plus I get to see them in HD on my big screen. Play ball! :D
Called in to cancel Sports Pack and was asked about movie channels. I declined those, no special offers on them anyway, and asked about promos for the MLB package. No go on that. Should I try again? Could I add it and then call to cancel it later, prior to the beginning of the season, and maybe get a deal then? Once you add it can you cancel it at anytime without penalty as long as it's before the season starts?

Yes...
Thanks Scott.
Just saw this in another forum.....
Just called and referenced the rate increase, and the increase in the Xtra Innings package, and told them I could go through MLB.com and get the season for 100 bucks. At 1st she offered me a $50 credit, and I told her that would still leave the cost of the Xtra innings at $142. She punched a few more buttons, and suddenly I had a $159 credit! That would be the MLB package for $33.

Wow..That's the first I've heard of that big of a discount. I'm happy with the $120 discount I got.
I just called to check on the 2010 price and was given the 6 payments of $31.99 amount.
I didnt threaten to cancel or anything, but just asked if she could do anything to reduce the cost since it seemed higher than last year and direct just had a price increase. She came back and offered me $10 off of each of the 6 monthly payments, to bring it down to $130.
I was very happy with that discount as I was on the phone for all of 5 mins with her, and came out $60 ahead.

I called to get it split into 6 months. They did it. Then they gave me Showtime free for 3 months. Nothing great, but meh, they gave me the NFL package for basically $150 this year and the NHL for $60 so I'm a happy DTV customer.
