View Full Version : Bell TV Adds Sling ... AND A la Carte
Canada's Bell TV, which boasts nearly 2 million DTH subs, has added the SlingGuide from EchoStar for advanced TV search, remote scheduling an recording services. Dubbed Remote PVR, the service is also available via 11 popular smartphones.
In even bigger news (forgive us, EchoStar) a la carte has come to Bell TV, at least for customers in Quebec. Subscribers to the service's The Basic pack will be able to choose an additional 15, 20 or 30 channels for $15, $19 or $22 per month respectively.•

Well that's exciting: In even bigger news (forgive us, EchoStar) a la carte has come to Bell TV, at least for customers in Quebec. Subscribers to the service's The Basic pack will be able to choose an additional 15, 20 or 30 channels for $15, $19 or $22 per month respectively. But I wonder what it really means in terms of choices.
Yeah, but is it my choice of 15, 20, etc channels or is it their choice of which channels are in the bundle? Kind of like the way Dish and Direct both do it now. Only the increased number if channels on Dish is larger. And cheaper. If it is the subs choice of channels that is one thing. If it's the provider's choice another. And I couldn't tell from the article.
a la carte is a la carte.
Think of a la carte as a buffet restaurant, where you choose from individual food items. In another restaurant, you can only choose meals from a printed menu, with no substitutions, analogous to programming 'packages'.
In the case of Bell, if it turns out subscribers cannot choose individual channels, it would not be true a la carte.
But I've never been through a Chinese buffet that required I take a specific number of dishes. Maybe it does work like a buffet and you can take up to that number of channels for that price.
1. I didn't specify a "Chinese" buffet.
2. All analogies break down sooner or later.
