Note: Maps do not include temporary HD channels for one-time events (Tennis, Golf, ...).
The peak part-time HD need for Cinema HD was 23 on Sunday 9/27/2009 at 3pm ET. Also need 1 extra for Mix HD

Can I ask a question? So those test channels are really just placeholders in the data stream, right, not actual bitstreams coming from the satellite? In this case, placeholders assigned to D10 according to the data, even if no signal is yet broadcasting for any of them. At least, that's what I take from the lack of a transponder assignment for them.
Is that correct?

I count 70 new slots there

Is that correct?Good question, and I'm not 100% certain.
Usually regular channels or test channels get assigned, and transmit.
These are weird, in that they are not assigned in the usual fashion.
I'd guess that they're just placeholder guide data, but they may actually be in use for something that we can't see.
It's a good sign of something coming. The metadata for each channel all contain generic info (wcbs, wnbc, xm...).

MLBEI?No.
We've been tracking this stuff for a couple of years. This is different.

placeholders for what? i thought D10 was full, isnt that why D12 exists?

hmm, seems simple......70 test slots equals 70 new national hd channels? dtv 12 is in testing right now, so........................

In some way this seems to make some sense... D10 and D12 are going to both be at 103. I guess the question I have is why are these showing up as D10, unless its something in the way the data are processed? What are the initial data and how are they parsed? Is a "103" location code translated to show up as coming from D10?
Note to moderators: This thread is slowly becoming a discussion thread. If that is not what its supposed to be, it should be locked and Sixto given a key. You can move the discussion to an approprate thread.

I reviewed TPN 31 data this AM.
I was hoping to see a new .bin file for D-12 data and still think it may happen that way but these 70 channels certainly seem to be the first sign of D-12 activity. 14 TPNs 5 slots each : agree it makes sense.
Sixto's daily updates will certainly tell more as time goes by.

Note to moderators: This thread is slowly becoming a discussion thread. If that is not what its supposed to be, it should be locked and Sixto given a key. You can move the discussion to an appropriate thread. It's fine to discuss transponder stuff. It appears that the reason the old thread was closed (and new thread created) was because it went off-topic for several days with the lull in activity, and I was distracted by the HD tabulating and didn't reign people in quick enough.
The old thread has just about every transponder change for the past 3 years. I need to add comments to the top of this new thread to point to the old thread.
In the meantime, I think it's fine to discuss the D10/D11/D12 transponder stuff right here like we always have.
In some way this seems to make some sense... D10 and D12 are going to both be at 103. I guess the question I have is why are these showing up as D10, unless its something in the way the data are processed? What are the initial data and how are they parsed? Is a "103" location code translated to show up as coming from D10?My initial thought has been that this is all related to prep work for D12, and they're just using the D10 guide stream in the interim.
But this can also be some behind the scenes change for D10, that doesn't make sense to us yet.
I do expect a totally different stream for D12, and will continue to check.

i read on tvpredictions.com that most of the new channels will be used for PPV. to add a great many channels or movies.
sorry, i want more HBO, CINEMAX, Showtime and .... channels like AMC.
Directv needs to pick to add lots of national channels, not so many ppv's

you must be relatively new because no one believes swanni at tvpredictions. he..a. steals most of his material and b. his opinions are untrue.
better to listen to satelliliteracer than swanni.

Swanni's a moron because he seems to think that 400 ppv channels are being put on D12. The idiot doesn't seems to realize that's it's 400 TITLES and not channels. Beside even if D12 was used just for just PPV channels that wouldn't even be enough for 100 PPV channels much less 400. He hates Directv so much he is spreading as much FUD as he can.
Let's be careful with the discussion so this thread doesn't get closed again.
HD anticipation goes in the anticipation thread (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=170082).

If it's not D12 what could it be? Dish was effectively able to squeeze more per transponder with 8psk. Is it possible that Directv is experimenting with something that would allow them to do the same?

To me this development is the most interesting thing going on. Whatever it turns out to be is all to the good. Sure the simple explanation that it is related to D12 is most probable. But I've got my fingers crossed that the mystery is really something they are doing with D10 that will amaze everybody. Bandwidth is what it all boils down to, at some point Directv is going to have to come up with a technological breakthrough to get more out of what they have. Imagine if they find a way to crack the rain fade problem with KA. That would be a real game changer.
Anticipating what's in the box is usually better than finding out what's inside. :)

So what do you think that means? Are these Test channels just placeholders for when D12 comes online or is Directv looking at squeezing more channels on the existing sats? Or could this be the precursor for the "Netflix"-like service thats been talked about with these "channels" that would push content onto the receivers?

Thanks, I was just wondering why Directv would put up placeholders for D12 on the D10 sat. Have they done this in the past when D11 was up and testing?

My gut feeling is that these "channels" are just placeholders in the data and do not represent real bitstreams (yet). As Sixto notes, D10 shares the 103º slot where D12 will be parked operationally, but so too does Spaceway 1 (which is conspicuously empty these days). Once the data placeholders are updated to reference something besides D10 (such as D12 or SW1), we'll have a better idea of what they really represent in terms of content.
Interesting times.
Lefty makes a good point, that I should keep re-enforcing. This is just guide data, not real channel data. There's no indication yet of any content.

It is interesting that the data/description changed within the last few days.

Just playing Devil's advocate, those could be 70 PPV.
What has people worried is the uncertainty of what will be added. While I hope that 90% of the people will be happy, I will admit that I am not getting my hopes up at this point like I did with D11. While I agree that D11 added a lot to those without local channels, I, myself, did not gain a lot from all that available bandwidth. My anticipation of D12 is tempered in so much that I'll believe the "200 channel hype" when I see it on my receiver.
Thanks for all the info, Only time will tell what exactly is going on with all the information you guys are finding. Its fun trying to figure out what all the data means though.
I'll save my anticipation for another thread. But 70 new HD channels (locals in there too) would be one heck of a Festivus!

The original was 2/20 and because of null data from TPN 5, a reload was done on 2/24. The channel associations are on the 2/24 data.
Hopefully info will come to light soon.

I had not really seen or paid attention to SW1. It seems a huge waste of resources to have a quiet satellite in the sky. Is SW1 capable of sending the National HD? I saw a post about the ability of one of the satellites to quickly redirect streams, making it better for the on demand stuff. Is it possible SW1 then is the national provider? What is the functional life remaining on SW1? The d10-12 line is supposed to be operational for at least 15 years, right?

I don't want to go down the "anticipation path" here (there's a thread for that).
Would there be anything in the stream specifically for Versus, if it was to show up in a short time span (for example next Monday) or since we previously had the channel, could we "flip the switch" and it's on?

So is there a new (non-PPV) HD channel coming today? Its Wednesday after all. ESPNU HD would be nice for March Madness.

There's been another unconfirmed claim by an MMA blog? It's best we wait and see.
Versus HD was replaced by Cinema HD 159.
Rather then add another national HD, it has always seemed likely that the slot was being saved for the return of Versus HD.
There have been rumors that Versus HD will return soon.
At the same time, Cinema HD 159 has been taken down.
It certainly does not appear to be a coincidence.
Patience.

I'm aware of all this, I follow this thread.
The only thing near a source for a resolution was a DirecTV tweet that it "might" return in April. My calendar says its only March 10.

Source channel for an HD LiL going on a CONUS Beam? I'm thinking about the MLS DK package, their is a game tonight and DirecTV is listing an HD feed, so it could be the local channel out of Colorado which is showing the game in HD.

Those were added in post #86, above.
I'm thinking something to get our hopes up for the channel we want. I'm guessing a few people will be upset when its not what they want.

Those just look like place holders, with many teams have the games on HD Broadcast, I thought maybe DirecTV would have to use a hidden source channel.

D* usually doesn't include local broadcast station feeds on NHLCI and NBALP. Why would they on a low demand package like MLS DK?

Well since most teams are on RSN's, I'm gonna say that's seldom the case.

Unfortunately, it looks like most of the MLS games aren't on the RSNs.
I must say the HD looks nice. Here's hoping Week in Review uses video from this feed. Lord knows I've squinted at plenty of super low resolution videos trying to figure out what USSF was talking about.

Any idea what 9516 is yet?No text data is in the stream.
Usually 9xxx test channels map to their xxx counterparts. You'd think it's related to 516, which soon will be moved from 514, but 514/516 is already in HD.
It is on a transponder (D11/TP4) with spacem which is one of the transponders with only 4 HD channels (for multiple Cinema HD).
If I had to guess, I'd say it's related to baseball, Florida and Cincinnati are on that transponder. But just a guess.

Hello Sixto, thanks much for all the great work you do here, very much appreciate it.... I don't know whether this info has been posted somewhere else but it may help with the 9516 question...The April issue of DTV's Access Magazine received this week shows 3 HD changes in the Channel Line-Up Section.... Under "Sports Pack" it now shows a reduction of the part-time HD RSN's from 5 to 2.... It now lists the following 3 RSN's as HD Full-Time: FSN Florida (654), Comcast Sportsnet-Bay Area (696), and Comcast Sportsnet-California (698).... The Line-Up list keeps 2 RSN's as HD Part-Time: FSN-Ohio (660-1) and FSN-Cincinnati (661-1)....
Previously (up to March 2010), Access Magazine had been showing these 5 RSN's as all being HD Part-Time.... This does not appear to be an editing typo because in order to list the 3 new HD full-time RSN's the editor had to remove the additional lines previously assigned to 654-1, 696-1 and 698-1 plus also insert (for the first time) the HD Icon next to these 3 RSN's.....
Since baseball season is starting soon perhaps this had been pre-planned by DTV all along for April 2010-- independent of D12.... If true, these 3 RSN's would be our first new HD since Altitude HD was added last fall....

Yes, would have assumed that Florida, Bay Area, and California are on the list for D12, which has been expected late-April / early-May.
Guess the only question right now would be if any go earlier then D12. Seems unlikely, but maybe there's some contractual obligation.
We'll see soon.

15 *TEST 9761 17 D10 @103W 3524 TMC Xtra HD East
Seeing (D12) next to a couple of them makes it almost certain this isn't the typical faux channel information you sometimes see in the remarks with a test channel. As for the four digit numbers in the remarks, they don't seem to coincide with a channel location where any of these new channels would be. Sure, TMC Xtra should be in the 500s, but based on the new channel assignments, it will probably be 556. We already have an SD version of the HBO2s, so we know where they will be. Same for the RSNs. It's odd that the first one also has "_HD PPV" appended.
Interesting stuff!

This does remind me that if they replace the PPV channels they've cannibalized in the last couple years, those will be considered part of the national 200 channels won't they?

It's a separate feed that's on 24/7. DirecTV already carries the SD version on 661.

Will be nice to get FSOhio in HD. Part of getting the Sports Pack is because they never offered the FSN college football games from the PAC-10 and Big 12 in HD, so I'd switch over to a different RSN to watch those games.

Interestingly, the Wikipedia article would seem to indicate it was FS Ohio that's been choosing to not carry those college football games in HD. But that's only if you believe Wikipedia.
BTW, if you are who I think you are, you run a very awesome website and I use it religiously during college football season. I sit down every week and make a schedule of all the games I can watch!

I think they make a choice not to have those games on the HD feed. I do wonder if its because of the infrastructure that FSOhio and FSFlorida have. Remember that these two were previously owned by Cablevision and were swapped over to Fox along with FSN Chicago a few years ago. Believe they are still controlled out of Bethpage, NY too instead of Fox's control facility in Houston.
As for the college sports, that's me and I'm glad you and others enjoy it.

Interesting to find GolTV on the list. Only last week, GolTV announced that they would be going HD in August. Nice to know that space will be there when they start broadcasting.
Hopefully the wet blanket crowd won't read too much into that.

Maybe they don't want to fill the thing to capacity right away, so they are leaving some room for expansion down the road (since they probably won't be adding another sat for at least a couple years).
Also 70 test channels don't necessarily mean there re 70 channels just waiting to be put on D12 when it goes live. They are just test data and could be any number of things.

Hi Sixto, did you notice that DTV eliminated a few days ago the 671-1 HD sub-channel for FSN Midwest and now returned it to the 671 full-time HD slot ?... I think this is good news for those of us who feared they were going to convert FSN Midwest into a part-time HD channel (although they never did at 671-1).....
Also, now we get the HD version automatically when we press 671 as opposed to having to manually enter 671-1 each time we wanted to see FSN-MW in HD... Nice surprise this week !

Can't say I've noticed any change with 671.
It's been 671 full-time for a long time.
You're saying that recently it switched to 671-1 temporarily?

FSN-Midwest HD was switched (from 671) to 671-1 months ago (last fall 2009)..... Sixto never updated his DirecTV HD Channels List (to reflect this change) because he told an earlier poster (months ago) that he wasn't sure if this was a permanent DTV move or not...
He speculated that perhaps DTV might be converting FSN-MW- HD back to a part-time HD channel but he wasn't sure... As long as 671-1 kept mirroring 671 (full-time and not as an HD part-time sub-channel) ) he was going to keep it as HD on 671 (on his List) , and not change it to 671-1.....Now, this week, DTV returned the HD channel to where it had been located until last fall 2009 (671) and eliminated 671-1 (which had been its HD home since last fall) ... We also now, once again, get the HD channel automatically on the remote without having to manually look for and press 671-1 if we wished to see the HD version...
Hope this clarifies any confusion... Thanks !

Yep, looks like the full time status never changed, just the channel number without the -1, then with the -1 and then not again, all along showing in the daily check as full-time. (btw, I don't check the -1 or not in the guide data, don't know how).

Sixto, any idea why they didn't remove the old HD Extra channel numbers? They removed all the old premiums a week after adding the new ones.
110 would be my guess also since you need 119 for the spanish package and Telefutura so they'd probably have a phase III dish already. Plus they needed to get something on 110 so the FCC wouldn't want the licenses back due to non usage.

No need for it before now, almost every game was available from the RSNs to NHL CI subs
From what I read/heard from Versus, the Alternate feed is only for when the telecast on the Primary channel was blacked out due to your local RSN having the broadcast rights.
The Alternate was just a friendly gesture, you really didn't miss any games.

I agree. The only guide data I have seen on 604 said "Alternate Programming" which means non-game Versus stuff for markets that are blacked out. Also, no mention on the Versus home page about simultaneous games. (And all the JIP games are RSN rebroadcasts, anyway.)

Hi Sixto, just received this month's DTV bill and in the Programming Newsletter insert they're listing the first 20 new HD channels to be added in May/June with all their corresponding HD channel locations ("The New DirecTV Channel Line-Up" on pg. 1)....
No surprises in the line-up announcements except for one. They are listing "TeleFutura" (doesn't say east or west) on Channel 74, not the current channel 408 where HD was recently added.... Since this Newsletter does not cover any networks from the Spanish-language packages (I get a separate Newsletter for "Mas" channels) my assumption is that non-"Mas" subscribers will now also be getting TeleFutura-HD for the first time but on this different channel location...
Since the channel selected is 74 I immediately thought of the old MPEG 2 HD channels previously located in that neighborhood.... However, it doesn't make sense to tie channel numbers to MPEG2 or 4.....If they want to open up TF to all DTV subscribers they can just leave it at 408 and open up the Guide...
Unless, for some strange reason, they wish to offer TF in MPEG 2 HD at 74 and in MPEG 4 HD on 408.... Any thoughts on what's going on here ?

Sounds like marketing to me ... put the channel low next to local channels where it will be seen. They may even do it on a market by market basis ... only in markets that don't have a local TeleFutura OTA feed or only in markets that do to save carrying all of the affiliates. Whatever their agreement with TeleFutura is.
The only way to know for sure is to wait for DirecTV to announce the plan in detail or put it into place where it can be observed. I wouldn't be surprised if the channel were added nationwide to all subscribers as DISH already has it in their "Choice" level English packages. People shouldn't have to subscribe to a full Spanish package to get it.

Might that be a new local channel. Seems like they've recently added a number of new local HD channels.
I don't think so.... Local channels should stop at Ch. 69 (no FCC OTA channel frequencies above 69 and this is being placed on 74).... DTV carries national networks beginning on Ch. 71....
Also, DTV Newsletter's "New Channel Line-Up" lists only national networks... No local stations are listed here (otherwise it'd be a very thick newsletter)... It's also listed as "TeleFutura" (between TeenNick and Tennis Channel) and not as a local station call letter, ie. WFUT-68- NYC....

Local channels should stop at Ch. 69 (no FCC OTA channel frequencies above 69 and this is being placed on 74).
Now that we are in the post-DTV transition era, OTA TV channel assigments stop at Ch. 51 (692-698 MHz). Virtual channel numbers encoded into DTV signals may still extend beyond 51.

The channels between 71 and 98 are generally all SD paid infomercial channels (not national "networks") which DTV does not acknowledge or list in any of the official Channel Line-Up Guides they issue monthly (in Access Magazine or the Programming Newsletter or in their website).... Some were added as fillers after the MPEG 2 HD channels were removed last month...
So my thought (and hope) is that they can easily remove the infomercial channel on 74 (or move it) in order to accommodate the TF-HD addition they've announced for Ch. 74.... We'll see soon enough....
I do agree that the channel number selected is puzzling (unless it's related to the MPEG 2 issue)....

We already have Telefutura HD. Its on channel 408 and you need DirecTV Más to watch it. Some stupid summer intern put in 74 though and nobody caught the typo. It will never be on channel 74. There will never be MPEG-2 HD channels ever again on DirecTV, they're 100% MPEG-4 now.

The channel number has nothing to do with the delivery method.

The DTV Newsletter does not cover, acknowledge or list any Mas channels.... I get a separate monthly Newsletter for Mas, where TF has always been listed at 408.... This is the first time that TF is listed here (for all non-Mas subscribers) and included as part of DTV's "national" Channel Lineup at 74...
It's hard to understand how the editor(s) would miss such a major error (this is on the cover/front page), given that now all subscribers are being told of this new national HD availability and will be calling DTV if they don't get it...
If you're right (which is very conceivable), the stupid summer intern made 2 errors: 1) he/she grabbed a network belonging to Mas (non-primary satellite) and now put it on the D10/D11/D12 menu and 2) changed its channel location by a factor of over 300..
If not, we definitely want to see it in MPEG 4 HD, not MPEG 2 ... plus the east HD feed to complement the west on 408...

BigRedFan, any chance you are in an area with a local TFT channel and the channel number is a typo?
I found these locals in Florida
WAMI-69 Miami
WFTT-50 Tampa
WLZE-65 FT Meyers
WOTF-43 Orlando

The DTV Newsletter is a "national" newsletter reporting ONLY about national networks on DTV and sent out to all DTV subscribers receiving their DTV bill in the mail ... So, whether one lives in a TFT local market or not would not impact the new national HD channel line-up announced in the insert....
If it's a typo, as surmised by the Coca-Cola Kid, then the typo would refer to the national Channel 408 vs. the 74 announced, and not to a local TFT affiliate channel number..... We'll find out soon enough.....

There's no local stations on channel 74. The FCC reassigned the frequencies for former broadcast (OTA) channels 70-99 to cell phones back in the 80's.

DTV's announcement of TeleFutura-HD coming to Channel 74 in their national Programming Newsletter has nothing to do with LiL.... TF-HD is a national network, not a local channel.... The only post I can see here which could tie to LiL is Beerstalker's and he was simply wondering whether the national Channel 74 announcement could've been related to a local channel number typo... But he was responding to the national network announcement, not to any new Lil announcements....
So, if this thread is "about national HD channels" and since TF-HD is a national HD channel, especially one that has been announced by DTV to be added next month to Sixto's "HD Channels Listings", then I would argue that we are both in the correct thread.... Sixto's transponder uplink watch always lets us know when new HD channels are about to go live and we're simply now on the watch for this new one announced, just like many other HD's before this one.... Again, nothing to do with LiL's....

Because they're available nationally on the same channel everywhere, as opposed to via local stations.

Technically, Univision and Telefutura are broadcast networks (ala CBS, ABC, NBC, FOX, CW, etc.), but DirecTV apparently has a NATIONAL deal with them (ala ION) that allows them to offer these channels nationwide... so for the purpose of DirecTV subscribers, Univision (402) and Telefutura (408) are national channels.
However, in the case of the Official AVS National HD Channel Lineups list, it's kind of hard to count these channels as a national channel.... not to mention that it's very possible that any non-DirecTV subscriber would most likely be unaware of their "national" status on DirecTV.

wrong, Telefutura is an OTA network, just like NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX.
List of Telefutura affiliates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Telefutura_affiliates)
You are correct that TF is an OTA network... That doesn't mean it's not also a "national" network.... It's a "national OTA network" in the same way that the Big 4 are national OTA networks (available in all 50 states over-the-air) but TF also differs in that it behaves as a "national basic cable network", ie. by providing silent ad cue tones every hour just like TBS, TNT, USA, etc. to its non-broadcast distributors such as DTV and filling in all commercial and promo breaks... plus hourly ID's identifying itself as a national cable service...
And it's also a "national" network in the sense that it provides national carriers, such as DTV, Dish, Fios, U-Verse, with a 24-hour continuous feed free of any local content or ever going to black (unlike the Big 4); this allows them to fill-in all the "white areas" (to reach 210 DMA's) where they do not have any local OTA affiliates.
DTV's presumed TF carriage on Ch. 74 is of the national TF feed, not the LiL feeds, which we also get additionally (on DTV) in TF local affiliate markets--- that was all I was trying to clear up...
By the way, thanks for the TF Affiliates List !.... provides good background to this issue....

The national feed of Telefutura is already in HD on 408, right next to all the other Spanish networks. It is not and will not be on 74, it was obviously a typo. Why do you find that so hard to accept?

DTV is not the only distributor carrying the national feeds of Univision and TeleFutura..... They're also available on DISH, Fios, U-Verse, and hundreds of cable systems serving DMA's where there are no Univision or TeleFutura broadcast affiliates.....It's how they cover all 210 DMA's....
The same thing occurs with Telemundo, Azteca America and Estrella TV, the other national Spanish-language OTA networks....As well as the non-Spanish TBN, ION, HSN, and Jewelry TV---- also "hybrid" national OTA networks...
Unlike Sixto's DTV Channel Listings here, the AVS Channel Lineup is not being consistent in the criteria it is using to exclude the Spanish-language national networks from its list.....It excludes them on the basis that they are "broadcast" networks, yet it still lists the non-Spanish "broadcast" networks of TBN, HSN, and Jewelry TV---I get these 3 OTA here as well as nationally on satellite...
I don't believe they yet understand that you can be both--- a broadcast OTA network and a national cable network at the same time.... Their list should be objective in reflecting carriage of the national cable versions of these hybrid services--- such as Univision, TF, and the others listed here.. It is a disservice to anyone looking at their List to apply these arbitrary exclusions...
It just makes no sense to exclude any national channel carried by DTV (and others) simply on the basis of an outdated network definition criteria dated to the 1950's....

TeleFutura has 3 national HD feeds (East, West, and Mountain); DTV only carries the West feed on Ch. 408....Channel 74 can be a feed other than the one DTV is carrying on Ch. 408, just like they do with ION-East (305) and ION-West (347) which are not placed next to each other ...
I don't find anything hard to accept.... I'm just giving DTV the benefit of the doubt that their Newsletter may just be correct as announced.... Has DTV announced that this TF announcement is a typo, as you say ?
