I am interested to know if anyone has any information on controlling an HR23 using the network. Is there a published protocol for the receiver, or is the internet jack even open for control?
Thanks
Ed
I am not aware of any published information regarding control of an HR2x via IP. There is a published standard for control via RS232 serial (and you can do that on an HR with a USB to serial adapter). So it is certainly possible to set up an external "translator" pc that takes input via network and sends commands out via serial data.

Thanks for the input. We install control systems and already have serial and ir drivers for the Directv boxes. Many other components like media servers, A/V receivers, DVD players already have two way ip control. I was hoping Directv was going to be following soon. Racks are so much cleaner with IP.
Nothing as of yet, would be nice to see though sometime in the future.

IP control of the HR2x would be great feature for a future enhancement and probably wouldn't be too hard for D* to implement. While you wait, you might want to try one of these:

you could always use a terminal server that you send serial commands over a network to and it outputs them as RS232 to the boxes
i use Lantronix stuff extensively at work and they work GREAT for this purpose

Lantronix and Digi both work well for me.

We have used Digi's. I appreciate the help. I was just hoping that DTV had gotten to IP control.

Has anyone heard whether IP Control is officially available for Directv DVRs? Where would one find documentation on it?

All documentation and discussion can be found in the CE area of dbstalk.com. It is available to everyone now but it really is a LOT of information to bring over so no one has done so.
If you open a browser and go to http://<YOUR DVR IP>:8080/info/getOptions you get all the information there is to get really. You must first however make sure that you allow the access by going into your DVR setup under Whole Home and then External Devices.

Head on over to CE. There are apps avaliable (I am using one)
You might want to take a look at this thread. Waltz49 has developed a web page to control you DVR over your local network using your laptop or iPhone.
Hi All,
I have a web app (web page) that allows you to control your network connected DVR from an iPod Touch or iPhone (and probably other mobiles as well). It has the usual remote buttons but also a live list of what is on each channel. Click on the show title and the TV tunes to that channel. Right now it is customized to my personal viewing habits (favorite channels) but it shows all channels. If there is interest, I can customize it so that individuals can create favorite station lists.
As I mentioned, it is pretty basic, and I've only tested it with R22, HR21 and HR24, from an iPod Touch w/ iOS 3.1 and 4 but it seems to work. Info and page at http://sillysot.com/dtv...
