Fast Forward or Pause?

SEEMS LIKE EVERY TIME YOU TURN ON the tube, someone's raving about their TiVo. Miranda on HBO's Sex in the City recently became obsessed with hers, for instance. There have been TiVo references on Friends, Ellen and Dawson's Creek. Regis swears by his; Oprah has one, too. So does Letterman: No. 4 on Dave's list of the "Top 10 Good Things About Being Cryogenically Frozen" is "When they thaw you out in a few thousand years, you'll have lots of stuff to watch on TiVo."

Two, count 'em, two shows -- The King of Queens and The Mind of the Married Man -- have aired subplots involving characters being horrified to find their TiVo recording gay-themed programming. On South Park, Cartman used a TiVo to transport himself back in time to 1776. (Time travel is not a standard TiVo feature, by the way.) And TiVo worship is not limited to Hollywood: In January, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael Powell gushed that "TiVo is God's machine."
