I for one am considering switching to D* for a HD DirecTivo once they come out. Now that I might have to pay a monthly fee for a 921, I might as well have the Tivo interface and named based recording, not to mention the NFL package and the NFL HD offerings. Originally, I was going to be one of the first to order my 921, but now I'll wait until the end of the year when the DirecTivo HD units ship, to make up my mind.

Most of us have felt that we were better off with the Dish DVR's, mainly because there was no monthly fee associated with the units. But, Dish has changed all that, and many here say they will switch to D*, if E* keeps the fees for their DVR service. But would you stay and gladly pay the fee, if you were paying for a DishTivo? I would!

I would but not more than $5 since thats the max D fee. But I want name based recodings and a dishplayer like interface.

I wonder if E is surprised at all the neativity shown for the pvr dvr boxes?

Thinking about this only if they offer the regular FREE PVRs and then a few bucks for enhanced TIVO functions

Yes, I want the DVR, but since I already pay for AEP I'm exempt from the fees.... for now.

Dont DirecTivo's offer a lite version that gives you some of the basic features for free? What all do you get in that version for free?

How do you change your vote? I voted for the wrong one after misreading it.

TiVo Lite is only on stand-alone TiVos. It offers a limited feature set to give new users a taste of TiVo in the hopes of getting them to sign up for the $12.95 per-box, per-month full service plan.

DirecTiVos are run by Directv, not TiVo. Since $4.99 covers all DirecTiVos on your account, it is already so cheap for full-service that Directv doesn't need to offer a DirecTiVo Lite option. If you don't pay the DVR fee, you can only pause live tv on the 2 buffers - no Season Passes, no Wishlists, no manual recording.

No monthly fees period. WE need to quit giving them a reason and excuse to charge for what is and should stay free.

The way I see this question and the one a while back of "will you pay $1000 for a 921" is a HUGE mistake for people to run to get in line and say "me,me,me,me, I'll gladly pay $1000 for a 921"
When Dish see's this and the almost rabid willingness to PAY $1000, of course they'll try to nickel and dime us. I for one will never admit to being 100 % satisfied in any poll type questions either, because that will eventually backfire too. I may get another 508 as my first one was $99 with a 301 deal for new subs. But Directivo with 2 tuners and a regular reciever for $99 for new subs is very tempting too at the moment.

It's not that it's 'free' it's just that the cost of service is so low to the company (after development costs) that almost any charge of for the DVR features is perceived as paying for nothing. If there is no up front cost for the hardware, then the fee is reasonable.

Sorry for parsing, but I always get a little worked when ever I see anyone make a proclamation that something should be 'free'. There is no such thing as a product or service that is free, period.

Capitalism works if we let it. Consumers will get what they demand at what they are willing to pay. Let Dish charge what ever it wants now... When Sony and Microsoft start adding PVR features to the game systems, and Apex starts releasing super low cost PVR's with minimal or no cost fees... then the real pressure will be on.

I really have no complaints about Dish's PVR/DVR/PTV/whatever as it is. Yeah, advanced searching could be useful - but its not been a problem for me and certainly not something I'd want to pay extra for. I don't have any complaints about picture quality. The ONLY feature that I might consider paying a fee for is a transparent way to archive specific programs to a DVD to watch in a different room or at a later time - and I don't expect either D* or E* to do anything there.
