Hi all, got a question for you guys:

I've got an old Sony TV that doesn't have a remote (nor does it have the capability to use one), and the power button is broken, so unless the power supply is cut off, it always stays on. That leads me to the question:

Is there an IR device that would allow me to cut the power supply to the television? What I have right now is a light-switch device which plugs into the outlet allowing me to cut power at will. I was wondering if I could aim a remote at it instead and cut the power.

Anyone know of such a thing?

This (http://www.youcansave.com/clapper.html) is the best thing that I can think of.

But, wouldn't he have trouble when he watches David Letterman or Jay Leno?

I was thinking of the clapper! I've already got a new TV, but I want to take this one out of retirement. I know this sounds ridiculous, but has anyone used the Clapper and found it to be reliable?

At just $19.99 how can you go wrong?

Forget the clapper. Using it might be mistaken for applause.

Go to Rat Shack and get an x-10 appliance module and your choice of remote, or better yet, check out the full selection of wireless/wired remote control products at www.x10.com.

I can't believe someone on this highly technical site would actually recommend "The Clapper". Any member that uses the clapper should be banned for life.

We do have our standards, ya know.

You can get cable and use the cable box to turn the tv on and off. Is that better Nick?

Thanks Nick! I'll peruse the X-10 products. They look very similar to something sent with my older PC made by IBM (I think Home Director or something like that).

Though the Clapper might draw interesting reactions from visitors!

I think rat shack had a product at one time that could do that, too.

If you get the clapper, do you need a shot to get rid of it?

I am an X-10 FREAK! I highly suggest that you check out http://www.x10.com/automation/x10_HK10A2.htm and go with the super remote starter kit. Just make sure that you plug the TV into the tranceiver module and NOT the lamp module.

"...the Clapper might draw interesting reactions from visitors!"Particularly when you 'applaude' for the tv program before it comes on.

"I am an X-10 FREAK!..."

While not exactly a "FREAK", I am definitely a power user of x10 products and have been for some 15-20 years. All my HT lighting is dimmed by lamp modules, my two Dishplayers transmit a/v wirelessly to all of my five TVs. Two wireless x10 cams keep an 'eye' on the place (and the neighbors) for me.

"Just make sure that you plug the TV into the tranceiver module and NOT the lamp module."

...actually, you don't have to use the tranceiver module for the TV - you can use an appliance module set to the same house code and channel 1. But you are correct in that lamp modules can only be used for incandescant or halogen lamps.

X10 is currently running a 1 cent sale on many of their most popular products.

But there is no appliance module with the above mentioned set. That's why i advised him to use the transceiver.
