Recently I returned home after several days to find my 721 flashing 4 LEDs (green, red, orange, yellow) all at the same time.

I called tech support and they had me unplug the power.
When it came back up it worked but everything on the hard
drive was erased.

I never did find a description of the meaning of the 4 LEDs all
flashing at the same time. I am curious about what might have caused this. Any ideas?

Do you have your 721 on a UPS?

It might have flaked out from a brownout or surge. With 721 reboot at 4 minutes even a small 500 watt uninterruptible power supply helps a lot. With all the power outages here its essential.

You might want to keep an eye on it, particularly if its still under warranty. It could be a hard disk about to fail. If it happens again, recommend you return it if under warranty

Yes, my 721 is on an APC BackUPS 650 UPS. Judging from the clocks in the house, I don't think there had been a prolonged power outage, though I do believe the power probably blinked off for at least a few seconds while I was gone.

Every wire going into the room where the 721 resides is protected by a surge protector -- power, coax, telephone.

Does anyone know what four LEDs flashing at the same time is supposed to mean?

Since this incident, the 721 has worked normally -- just the usual software bugs.

4 flashing LEDs mean the 721 detected a harddrive fault and reimaged the drive. It likely crashed and when it restarted detected the harddrive had an error. It then wiped the video partition and reinstalled the OS. After its reimaged the drive it needs one more restart to work - the 4 flashing LEDs indicates this.

btw, it doesn't mean forsure the harddrive is defective or bad, it is possible that the 721 crashed and even with the journeling file system a file was corrupted - this would be detected on the next restart and the reinstall would be triggered.

I also have the coax lines on a surge protector.

Are you from California?

Nope pittsburgh. With all the heavy weather this summer power problems are a daily issue, and a storm just passed thru here.

Duquesne light is very poor too.
