Since from what I have heard, the 721 is no longer in production.

I want to get a PVR of some kind.....should I now wait??

Don't think I would want a 501/508 since I know I would want to record something while watching another channel live....

What are the best deals on 721's?

Where did you hear that? I've seen nothing anywhere anbout the 721 not being produced anymore... so I wouldn't believe it.

The 721, regardless of what some folks say, is a stable receiver. You can get them form many places... dishdepot.com, sears.com, your local retailer, ebay, etcetera....

By the way, welcome to DBSTalk.com! :hi:

I agree! I've had a 721 for about 7 months now and really like it. The only reason I can think to wait is if you really rather get into HDTV. Then you might want to wait until the new line is out. Otherwise - the 721 is pretty good.

I like my 721 and it works well. You might want to get one now since there is no $10 a month DVR fee attached to the receiver.

I would also highly recommend http://www.dishdepot.com . Tell Mark we sent you and he will set you up.

I like mine too but I wished they weren't so expensive. If they were as much as a 2 tuner directivo they would have been more sucessfull recieiver for Dish. If they would have been comperable to say the price of a 508 or $50.00 more I would have had more than one in my house. Love the dual tuner capabilities. I guess the 522 will be what I will be looking at in the future since I have AEP I don't have to worry about fees.

If you're dead set on Dish, then the 721 is what you probably want, be prepared though, the 721 is more of a glorified VCR than a true PVR. If you aren't as concerened with picture quality, a standalone Tivo + a cheap (read: free) receiver for about the same or less... and have a *much* better PVR both stability and feature wise.

You'll lose out on dual-tuner and picture quality, but if neither of those are a concerne of yours, that's definitely the way to go over the 721. Unfortunately, for a lot of people (myself included) picture quality and dual-tuner are a "must have," making the 721 the only real choice. If you buy now, you'll avoid the PVR fee from Dish as well ... but with a SA Tivo + IRD, you'll never have a PVR fee (assuming you get lifetime sub to Tivo). *shrug* Six of one, half dozen of the other.

If you haven't been a Directv subscriber I would suggest getting Tivo you can probably get 2 Tivo's that work reliabily for the cost of one 721. As a new customer you would also get free install.

If you can get get a good buy on the 721 then that would be the receiver to get. Its worth paying a little more over the 508 but not worth paying too much more where you could almost buy two 508's for what you pay for one 721 unless you got some kind of deal.

You can get two 501/508's for $149 to $199 each in which is cheaper than one 721 receiver if you can get their special promotion. The bad part about it is that you will be charged another $4.99 seeing that you will have two pvr's instead of one having an extra outlet you will be charged for.

My distributor says there are still plenty of 508's and j721's.
