Last two girls out before we get to the Top 12 ..

All four judges were definitely smoking something tonight.
Crystal was outstanding as always.

They seem to be judging contestants against themselves, rather than each other.
If you're lucky enough to be mediocre and survive to this point; and then deliver something halfway decent, you're all of a sudden a superstar.
Two girls, Crystal and Siobhan, deserve to be there.
The rest have worn out their welcomes.
Most of tonight's show sounded like a funeral.

Boring night.
No one really "wowed" me either. I thought Crystal was best. I would eliminate Paige and Katelyn based on tonite's performances.
I was ready to write Lacey off after last week, but I thought she sang well tonite.
I hope Katie stays around one more week. I would just once like to hear her sing the "right" song for her, whatever that may be.
Right now, my "final three" would be Crystal, Siobahn and Lee Dewyze.

My new favorite is Siobahn, she's really impressed me the past couple weeks....I think Paige and Katie are gone just judging by tonights performances....although I hope Katie stays but she didn't sound good at all tonight :(

I say we eliminate everybody and start American Idol from scratch. I'm just not impressed with anyone this year.
Can we get someone to sing something other than these slow songs? It's just too boring. I feel like I'm listening to WLIT-FM, Chicago's "Lite FM"--soft rock to the max.

After about the third s-l-o-w song, I was hoping someone was going to come and do Pearl Jam's "Lukin".

Katie and Paige gone, based on performance. But something tells me America will keep Katie. Katelyn is a good singer, that song last night was just boring. I would get rid of Didi. Her voice just annoys me for some reason.

Sorry...but I'm not on the Crystal bandwagon at all....I want to reach in my pocket for a $1 bill and then look for her open guitar case to toss it in...
She has a pure and clean "folksy" voice...no doubt...and Simon and Randy are clearly enamored with her "style.
Problem is...I can walk on several street corners in San Francisco almost any day and hear the exact same thing. Sorry - she is not an "Idol" so far with what she has done IMHO.
Perhaps once she steps outside of her comfort zone...we'll see what she can really do. Until then...Siobhan and Lily are the only two female contestants that I see as top Idol candidates so far....
The song choices are driving these things...and most folks are not making good ones...even the judges have repeatedly pointed this out.

I enjoyed last night .. the girls as a whole were much better this week than previous weeks (perhaps that's because Haeley is gone, though ) ..
Crystal was the most comfortable on stage.
Siobhan got a replay from me. Simon dissented and didn't like it. I kinda get where he's coming from although I agreed with the other three Judges. There is definitely a "something bugs me about her" with respect to Siobhan, but she sang it very well I thought.
Lilly .. Kara's comment summed up my thoughts the best. How the heck did she make Patsy Cline sound current?
Didi & Lacey - boy, they sounded an awful lot alike this week .. but different. Either way, I thought they both did well.
I suspect Paige will be gone this week .. She sang Happy so sadly :(
Ready for the Top 12 next week, but there has been some definite improvement from week 1 .. This is good.

Didi was spot on last night.
Let's face it, it's Crystal vs. Sioban, that's it, game over. The rest are a complete joke, literally can't sing, karaoke city. I wouldn't say the judges were on crack last night, let's just say they were smoking the Fox network's panic pipe at having two talented girls and the rest train wrecks, and their job was to try to hype up these weakies to save the show. It was embarrassing, they were fawning over complete epic fail performances all night. As a music producer, the fraud was clear and plain. They all had a serious "talking to" from the show's producers. After getting pounded by the Olympics, and Simon leaving, and Ellen a total crash n burn, and many of their female performers unattractive with weak voices, they're desperate. So they had to go into pitch mode: sell these losers...hard!
Let's face it, it's Crystal vs. Sioban, that's it, game over [...]As I posted before, I don't really disagree. I see the final three as Crystal, Siohban and from the boys, Lee Dewyze.
That's if it ended last nite, tho.
IIRC, in past years, Jordin and David Cook didn't "blossom" until the final 12. Something similar could happen this year. If it does, though, I think the dark horse will be one of the other girls and probably not one of the other boys.

For those folks who have actually watched this show for years...we've certainly seen today's favorite become tomorrow's departing contestant...
...its too early to tell.

...and the rest train wrecks I wouldn't go that far. Most of the girls are just boring. The train wrecks come tonight with the boys. :D
Well, the judges have been fawning over Crystal from the getgo, and she's ok, has that bluesy busker thing going on. But she's not at all flexible. Keep in her in that Janis Joplin, husky street singer genre or even a country version of that and she's fine. But she's not going to be comfortable in other genres.
When if ever are they switching to the forced format where they must do the "style/genre of the week"? Have they abandoned that?
You guys were talking about surprise emergence during the weeks, and it's Sioban who really pulled that off. She came out of nowhere with "the note" and then has stormed the Bastille ever since. I don't see that happening with any of the other girls, save Crystal, but she's already peaked. The rest simply don't have the equipment/vocal chops to take off beyond what we've seen. Pitch issues, weak voices, poor presentation, and/or that most un-PC of Bitter Truths: Ugly.

True, she could be in some trouble when they start jumping other styles. "Ok Crystal, it's Rat Pack Week, Good Luck!"

Crystal is somewhere between Alanis Morissette and Melissa Etheridge .. I didn't see either one of them having trouble belting out hits. Crystal will do just fine post Idol regardless of her final ranking.
Lilly, Sioban and Lacey (can't get over her eyes) are my favorite girls this week.

Well, I'm a Crystal fan too but Maruuk is right that she will probably have trouble with other styles/genres. We'll see.
The other problem Crystal has is the one aluded to by the judges when they question whether AI is the right vehicle for her. AI is an extrovert's venue. Working the crowd, showmanship, a sunny personality, easy banter, all work to a contestant's advantage. Does Crystal connect with the crowd while performing on the big stage of AI? No. Her music-making connects with people who appreciate her music-making, but her style is more introverted and small venue, even when she's singing up-tempo like the Alanis Morissette song. I think this 'fish out of water' factor will catch up to her before much longer. It's already showing in the group sing which opens the show. A little painful to see her have to endure that.
Yes, Crystal will be fine after AI, but only in her comfort zone/comfort genre imo.

Lilly, Sioban and Lacey (can't get over her eyes) are my favorite girls this week. Are L and L two of the girls that Maruuk thinks are ugly? PC or not, I don't see any "ugly" girls left. Crystal and Lilly aren't exactly Cosmo covers but they're cute enough in their own way imo. I'd choose a different hair color for Lilly but that's not my call.

+1 If Lilly can sound the same each week, I don't care if her hair is green. ;)
Not ugly like would you go out with them in real life ugly, just in terms of being an American Idol international glamor star, that context. If you adjust the "looks" standards by that measure, really none of the girls remaining are slam dunks. Didi and Sioban are clearly the best-looking of the bunch. But Didi's voice ain't gonna cut it. Lilly's a skank, needs to lose 25 pounds to lose her double chin.
Are they going to a genre-song system this time around like they always have in the past?

According to Wikipedia, yes.
The top 24 semi-finals format used in the fourth (http://www.dbstalk.com/wiki/American_Idol_(season_4)) through seventh (http://www.dbstalk.com/wiki/American_Idol_(season_7)) seasons will also return this season.

Well that's odd, they're down way lower than 24 but haven't yet gone to the standard "rock"/"country"/"50s" mandate. Frankly it's getting pretty boring allowing the singers to make all these indulgent song choices in any genre they choose, it puts the performances all over the map without allowing us to focus on the singers all attempting one style or another in unison.
It also favors some who are restricted in styles since they don't have to branch out. And it hurts those who are versatile, but don't kill in any one genre.
Ah, the cute ones survived. Excellent!
Sounds like next week they're doing an all-Stones deal. Cool!

Too bad its a singing/performing competition. :eek2:
In that regard....they really blew it this week - some of the "survivors" boggle the mind to still be in the running. Paige? Give me a break.

Yeah, Paige over Katelyn was wrong.
Katie over Lilly was also outrageous (or would be if I cared enough to be outraged.)
Not much else to say about a results show. Tedious melodrama.
The dueling pianos of >too little< and <<TOO MUCH>> from last season made for strange stagefellows. ;)
On a bad note, I couldn't believe they would vote Lilly out. But that's America, I guess.
On a better note, I'm glad my other two favorites (Lacey and Siobhan) made it through.
It's hardly a singing/performing competition when the judges themselves openly critique the "look" of the contestants right from the getgo. Popstars are certainly about looks as well as the other stuff. Faith Hill and Shania and Taylor Swift and Katy Perry didn't get where they did on voice alone.

+1
Makes you wonder if a "good" performance draws fashion criticism just to have something negative to say. :nono2:

Well, "Lookism" used to be more important in years past than it is now. Susan Boyle isn't exactly eye candy but she's sold millions of CDs across the world (not to mention the most viewed video in internet history). And deep dish Ashley Rodriguez is sent packing first round in the Top 24. The times they are a changing... for the better. :)
