I've had D* for one month with the Choice XTRA HD DVR package.
I was attempting to add HBO and got a message that I would need to upgrade my package "You have an older package that does not support the programming/service you have selected."
Hu? My choices to upgrade to INCLUDE Choice XTRA!
Is it because I signed up during all the deals last month?
I'm guessing I can just call and add HBO, just wondering what was going on with upgrading a current package.

You shouldn't be getting that with a current package, that's generally only grandfathered in packages. I'd try calling, you might not even have to talk to anyone. Last time I added a premium, the automated system handled it (and I have a grandfathered package.)

Choice extra + HD DVR is no longer a current package. The HD and DVR are now split as separate options to add to the packages. The OP will have no problem retaining their current package by calling D* to add HBO, although some would consider this a PITA to do so...

This option is choice extra without the HD DVR built-in (which is the current package.)

You don't have to change your grandfathered package. Just call them, it's simple.

Right. You can add to a grandfathered package but you need to call instead of doing it online.
If you have a grandfathered package, ALWAYS call to make changes. And always confirm up front your package won't change. I tried to add a Sports Pak once and they insisted I had to upgrade. I declined. Called back later, this CSR gave me a deal on the Sports Pak and did not alter my grandfathered package.

All correct, but to add insult to injury - D* charges $1 more for the new package. (Essentially, it appears they waived the DVR price increase on the grandfathered pkg)

I guess you can look at this one a few ways; one could say that D* decided to give existing customers a price break for a change while passing the DVR increase to new customers (or those who choose to upgrade.)

Thanks for the info. I had no idea the plus HD DVR was part of the package. I'll give them a call.
