I just moved into an apartment complex where Dish's are allowed.

DirecTV came and installed everything (HD dish). Apparently there is a portion of the Dish that is attached to the balcony which is a no-no.

Now, I am just not really sure what to do.

The people at the apartment complex told me the best thing to do was to do a bucket/cement/pole type thing. I guess my question is...What exactly should I do before DirecTV comes for the reinstallation? I ask the last question because the guy downstairs said that DirecTV usually does most of it. I didnt really know what that meant.

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a type of bucket, type of cement, and/or how long a pole?

Unless you can bolt the feet of the tripod down onto the balcony and can buy a (cheap) adapter, you aren't going to be able to use a tripod with a Slimline dish; the dish is too big, heavy, and has too much wind-loading for a tripod.

You *can* use a non-penetrating roof mount, though. They work great and nothing has to be attached anywhere. The only downsides are the price, and the fact that they take up a lot of balcony space.

IF you do not need the HD dish / HD service...the 18" round dish will give you SD reception AND work with the bucket on the deck.

Just checking,
It would not be the first time a new customer discovers they need an HD TV + an HD receiver and that the recorder (HDDVR) is an option. Then there is the dish issue. It may be a choice between SD and nothing.

I have been wrong before.

A tripod with cement feet for cheap. Non Penetrating roof mount is the best option. I have one holding up a 4 foot dish, and it never moves in even the highest wind gusts.
