On a commercial where DirecTV was slamming Dish Network for their fees they mentioned that Dish Network charges $40 to transfer files from DVR to Computer's PC.
DirecTV does this for free? I didn't think that was possible.

The commercial is referencing Dish Networks fee of $40 to enable use of an external hard drive.

I was actually surprised they put that in an ad. I always thought external drives worked, but weren't officially supported. Or is it that they'll tell you you can do it, but don't call with issues?

I was surprised too. I don't DirecTV ever made eSata drives a "supported" feature.

How many regular everyday D* customers give a rat's azz about hooking up their own hard drive? I am probably a lot more tech savvy than the average person off the street and have no desire whatsoever to hook up another hard drive.

I think Dish networks external hard drives allow a user to copy a movie/show from the DVR to the external unit for archiving. Its a different implementation than DirecTvs "Ours or Yours but not both" implementation.

bell tv canada has same thing dish has but it's free with then.
Where is the ad saying we have HD MRV form any HD DVR you have to any HD or HD DVR box vs dish's sd only from 1 DVR and you can also view your DVR's shows on your pc or laptop?

No, but with Directv you can watch anything from any HR DVR on another non DVR or DVR...MRV. How's that on Dish? :eek2:

I am trying to find the ad but I remember it referencing transfering files from DVR to PC's Hard Drive.
You can't do that with an external eSATA hard drive can you?

Not unless you already have DVR fees on your account. Somehow I doubt you can have ONLY a vip211 (or a couple) and turn it into a DVR without DVR fees.
The point is, you're already playing the DVR fee, so ya, why not let you hook up a hard drive.
Maybe they're talking about DIRECTV2PC? Not exactly "copying" to a PC, but it is "free"

Wrong. You don't pay a DVR fee for the 211 under any circumstances.

But it's still not as good as a normal DVR. It only has one satellite tuner.

Go to "Tips & Tricks" on d-TV site and they tell you how to connect the extra capacity drive. Sorry, not allowed to post URL's just yet.
