Hello,
Been a Dish subscriber for 4 1/2 years now and my 622 is that old as well.
We are moving and likely need to have a dish assembly installed.
I'm also hoping I can negotiate a small rate reduction per month as well. I see that new customers have a pretty good year discount, but it looks like other charges may have increased.
The current breakdown of what I am paying is as follows:
Silver HD $10
Plat. HD $10
Top 200 w/ Locals $52.99
DVR charge $6
tax 1.47
Would I be better off canceling and signing up for new customer service on another 2 year basis? Or do I already have a pretty good deal compared to what I can get and have to pay that there is not much of an advantage?
1. I'd like a reduction in my rates
2. Don't want to have to pay for installation at the new place
thoughts/idea/suggestions?
Thanks!

Not sure if the FSN add ons cost extra:
but per DISH this is what I have:
Current Programming: America's Top 200, SilverHD
Local Channels: Los Angeles, CA
Premium Channels: PlatinumHD
International or Ala Carte Add-ons: Fox Sports West, Fox Sports West 2
Sign up for DishMover, but tell them you want a "loyalty" upgrade during the process. That is what I did.
You shouldn't need to threaten to go to D* to convince them. Just mention that you are considering your options for your new home.
I got essentially the same deal as the current new subscriber deal, fo no charge.

You cant cancel and sign up as a new customer unless you provide totally different customer info, as you have to be away a year or 2 to qualify as a new returning customer.

Actually it's six months to be able to return as a "former customer".

I don't believe you need both Silver and Platinum HD. That's save $10/mo right off the bat. Call and try to get a credit for the duplicate HD.

You won't get a credit for the past charges at all, and you won't be able to change it through an agent. Drop HD online, suck up the $5 downgrade fee, then add the HD/Platinum combined for $10.
As for moving, unless you add the $6 Service Plan, you will have to pay $95 for the install. With the Plan, it's $15. No other reductions allowed. You might get a $5 discount for 6 months. That'd be it.

That just sucks. Getting double charged for HD for ? months? Why can't an agent handle this along with NOT charging a downgrade fee and issuing a credit?

It's not a double charge, you pay $10 for part of the HD package and another $10 for the next tier of HD channels.

On Feb. 1, it was changed to 3 months away to qualify for "Formers DHA24"

Wow that seems odd to me. I just used the movers program with D* and I didnt think it had anything to do with the service plan. Could be different for E* but that seems stupid to me. Does E* require a new 2 year commitment with the move to? My comments for the original poster are that I did not understand why you were paying for both the HD packages but then again I dont understand E*'s site either. Seems you should only have to pay for the one. Give them a call and see if the move is free. My guess is it is. I doubt they would want to lose the money because people wanted to move and they have to pay for the new install and a new 2 year commitment. Not real user friendly. I am curious to know what happens.

Look at it as one being ala-cart and the other a bundled package.

Dish made a LOT of changes on Feb 1, 2010. One of those is that there is a fee for ALL non-new install tech vists, including Dish'n It Up, Dish Movers, Service Calls, etc. If you have the Service Plan, the fee is $15. If you don't, the fee is $95. This fee is in addition to any upgrade fees.
A Dish Mover does not result in a commitment.

$10 for the HD channels that go with your base package and another $10 for an additional, optional set of HD-only channels.
New customers get the optional channels free now. Current customers normally are not eligible for that change, but there's ways around it.

That is what Dish agent told me, I pay for the "insurance" $15/month and the move or new install would be free, and I can cancel the $15 charge anytime afterwards.
I'd have no problems with providing new subscriber info to qualify for the "new customer" rebates/credits and the like.
From the replies, I see no to little upside in keeping my current subscription, except for the potential new "hardware leasing" fee for the 722?
I take it though I'd have to go through the process of sending my old 622 in and having to pay the $100 for the new 722.
I realize it's probably not worth it, but any ideas on what dish might charge me to simply keep my existing 622?

I have only one $10 HD charge (HD & Platinum).

Per GW Dish (in PA?), a second party retailer, said that there is no HD/DVR receiver "leasing" fee like i paid when I got the new 622. Moreover, they offer a $50 rebate for ordering through them.
And assuming I qualified for the new customer service, the install would be free, and I get the $15 off/month for a year of my programming service.
Not sure why I was being charged x2 for HD Prog., makes me steamed if it was inappropriate. Not to mention stupid D* cut my prog. off as of today, even though I told them to keep it through the end of the month...dunno why I should even keep my biz with them...
The Silver HD is the HD channels in the Silver package. The Platinum HD are the HD channels that don't have an SD counterpart (MGMHD, Crime & Investigation HD, etc...)

Things to consider:
- You won't be a NEW customer; you'll be a RETURNING customer.
- You'll need to be without service for at least 3 months to qualify.
- You'll HAVE to have a 2 year commitment as an RC, while a Dish Mover has no commitment.

Hmmm. I find this very odd. I am with D* and pay for the protection plan but my understanding is that it covers me from equipment failures. I wouldnt think it was for the movers program for either D* or E*. I guess I do understand they are out more equipment when you move as they have to install a new Dish on the house but still.

DOes that mean they will give you the option of doing things yourself? (that they previously insisted had to be done by a tech)

Nope. The only way to do a self install is buy everything yourself or doing things like going from a 222K to a 722K, where it's a simple swap.

A little confused here. If all the above refer to a new account:
-Insurance (Service Plan) is $6.00 mo (not $15)
-E* frowns heavily upon those Retailers that participate in "Flipping" existing customers to "New Account" customers by manipulating account info.
-There would be no "hardware leasing" fee
-If you qualify for DHA24, there is no $100.00 fee for a 722
-E* will not allow new "Promo" based activations using previously owned equipment.

If you lease an additional receiver, it has to be installed by a tech. If you lease upgrade a single-tuner receiver to a dual-tuner receiver, or a single-output receiver to a dual-output receiver, it has to be installed by a tech.
If you buy a receiver outright, you can install it yourself, and if you upgrade from a single-tuner to a single tuner (say, 311 to 211), or Duo to Duo (say, 625 to 722), and you don't need new dish/switch parts, you can install it yourself.
But Dish has learned through a LOT of experience that very, very few customers "get it right" when doing their own upgrades if changing to a different class of receiver, so they require a tech visit.

Very, Very few customers have the desire to learn and/or acquire the tools for what is essentially a single job... having an installer do it is also buying his expertise and access to the proper tools.

To briefly revive this post, I think I've figured out what provider works best for me. I welcome any corrections, critiques and/or confirmation of my thought process.
So I think I've decided I'm going (back to/with) DISH again, since I originally signed only with my info, we will just use my wife's info at our new address to qualify as a new E* customer and get the 24 contract and VIP722 free lease.
It is my understanding that GENERALLY E* has less expensive plans for similiar type of programming. But that the HD picture is compressed and is usually not as good either. However, I've got a Panny 50u series plasma and max display is 720p (it does accept higher bandwidth input, it just down converts them to 720p).
Moreover, the savings for slightly lesser HD quality over a 12-24 month period is more appealing to me. Finally, the VIP722 has the features I enjoy, 3 HD recording & 1 HD DVR playback, as well as the ATSC tuner. It is my understanding the HR23 (or D* equivalent) does not have that capability or any additional capabilities ABOVE the 722 (i.e. a single tuner cannot stream mult HD content for HD MVR) correct?
I think that sums it up, thanks for any input.

DirecTV has a different MRV than Dish claims to have. Like everything else it will matter on use and opinion. Capabilities would get more into features than anything. You can get ATSC with DirecTV's HD DVR with an add on device. It will still only record a max of 2, 3 if you count VoD. Price is going to be based on what you want for equipment. Dish increased their receiver fees significantly based on what type of equipment you want to get.
I would read about DirecTV's MRV because if you start asking which is better it will just be a debate in situations that may not apply to your situation. DirecTV's MRV is also not available nationally until next month.
