These are the same dates they are available on directv pay per view and also probably cable.
Um...so does DirecTV. And my local Blockbuster. And virtually everyone else other than Redbox & Netflix.
Why does this make front page news?? Because Dish put out a press release stating the obvious??

Ummm.
Did Dish call this and exclusive or did they say, simply that Dish was offering this faster than Netflix and Redbox?
You would think Direct would do the same since they are the leader in PPV HD channels.

But I wouldn't have known about it if I hadn't seen it here in the news release. So thank you, Jason!
Boy, people are quick to try to mislead people about what the news release says. The title of the news release is: "DISH NETWORK® OFFERS “THE BLIND SIDE” AND “SHERLOCK HOLMES” ONE MONTH EARLIER THAN REDBOX AND NETFLIX" and that's what the news release confirms. And then it says (emphasis added): "DISH Network customers will be some of the first in the country to watch “The Blind Side” and “Sherlock Holmes” from the comfort of their own homes by ordering through DISH Cinema."
Since we Dish customers are only "some of" there must be "others." And indeed I see on a Google news search this ad at the top: "Rent the Blind Side 28 Days Earlier at Blockbuster." And DirecTV and Dish show on their respective cinema web pages:

Please don't shoot the messenger. We post what gets released. Many users come here for information. Some don't follow news like this as close as us "geeks". LOL

The Blind Side movie was also available this last Tuesday (March 23rd) at the Blockbuster Express kiosks for only $1 overnight DVD rental. However it wasn't available at Redbox yet.
I used one of the many codes listed on the insideblockbusterexpress.com website and saw it for free!
Not exclusive as far as I'm concerned.

You need to read things better. NO WERE does Dish all this an EXCLUSIVE. They are just ahead of Netflix and Redbox.
Better enjoy those Blockbuster Deals while you can.

Not all press releases are created equal... but if a company releases them, we post them. It's up to you to decide if it is valuable info... but at least make sure you read it for what it says and not for what you want it to say... and as always, don't shoot the messenger!

Since I don't watch many (any) commercials, this was good info for me. Thanks!

There is some significance to this event even though it isn't a Dish Exclusive.
What you are seeing here is the first of the effects of the new agreement between some of the studios and Netflix (and Redbox).
Releases of these films by Netflix and Redbox will be delayed to provide the studios more time to "sell thru" the DVD's and PPV.
In exchange both Netflix & Redbox received better pricing when they do get the titles and Netflix has received new streaming contracts.
I think the studios are crazy if they think this will help them sell DVD's but it might improve PPV purchases and the benefit to the Netflix streaming service is a good thing.
Isn't RedBox $1? So Dish is one month earlier, and five times the price? :)

I'll wait 30 days and watch it via Netflixs.
I've NEVER used the PPV. Over priced for my taste.

What I find amusing here is that in this thread we have people on the side of "I don't mind waiting if I can save money"... but another forum I was on recently was mad at some of the movie studio deals to keep rentals delayed at some outlets like RedBox/Netflix/etc. and they didn't want to wait.
In that thread I was on the side of why-not-wait-and-save-money-instead-of-being-first-on-the-block... so it's just interesting how it seems like there is no "win" in these scenarios.
When someone announces "we have it cheaper" people scream "but I want it now"... and then someone says "we have it now" and people inevitably scream "but a few weeks later it will be cheaper".

[...]Had early reasonably-priced access never been available, I'd agree with you. But in the latter case, folks had something they once enjoyed taken away from them, so I'm not surprised by the anger.
I look at it as a convienence/time issue.. I'd rather stay home and pay the extra money and watch the movie whenever it's available via PPV than waste time and gas picking up or dropping off or depending on mail to deliver it.. Of course i live in country, 20 mins outside of town and i don't feel the need to see every movie as soon as it is available thru whatever outlet.
I think dvd rentals will disappear completely in a couple of years anyway as technology to download and view on demand becomes the norm.

What will be the shame there is that, based upon the pricing model we have seen so far, it will cost more to watch programs while the infrastructure and overall production costs will drop.
The least expensive model (Netflix streaming) is very limited in supply while all the PPV, On Demand and streaming/download options are typically $4 or more for SD and $5 or more for HD and none of them are (or will be for quite some time) BluRay quality.

DVD-Blurays are here for sometime. Broadband carriers are already bringing up bandwidth throttles, which will hamper the Streaming of HD Quality videos.
Millions of people still don't have, Broadband that will support HD quality streaming. Millions more live in Rural areas that are DECADES away from getting broadband, and DVD-Bluray will be the only way for them. Now were we get DVD-Bluray's will be changing, though.

I agree with you and should have clarified it with the fact that i believe Blu-Ray will be around awhile.. Once Blu-Ray is the main hard copy format, the outlet availability will likely change. I do live in a rural area, but i don't rent anything except occasional PPV on Directv Cineman in HD. I usually buy Blu-Ray though.

So why should I pay either $5.99 or $6.99, each, to watch the Blu-ray versions, when I can wait a few weeks and get a copy as part of my existing Netflix membership? I know! To feed the greedy Hollywood moguls who think that, by postponing release of product to rental outfits, they'll make more money through sales and PPV. But not from me!

I don't think any responsible person doubts Netflix will survive and likely continue to prosper for the foreseeable future. The same can't be said about Blockbuster.

I don't know why you directed your comment to me? I simply reported the dates that the DVD would be available on Blockbuster and on Netflix. I made no comment about which was better for me.
On second thought, I do know why. lol

I just wait for movies to air on the premiums. It's easier for me.
