I am trying to control, or at the very least find the status of my ViP722. I can ping the receiver from my LAN so I am hoping that I can somehow communicate with it in order to integrate it into my home theater system. Is this possible?

I can NOT reach it from the internet as my DirecPC modem/router won't allow me to control the ports.

Thank You:

Don

Dish Remote Access from your Dish account on line.

You can see all recordings, add/skip/delete recordings/timers, etc.

Thanks for the reply, but I can't access my receiver via Internet.

Doesn't have to be over the Internet, it can do it via satellite now, too.

That's a one way communication.

...in order to integrate it into my home theater system. Is this possible? Not quite sure what you mean by this. You cannot access content output or recordings via your network. Yes, you can ping the box, but that's it.

My problem is that I can not expose the receiver to the internet, as I am using DirecPC, and it's router is closed to me. I can spend more money and get a router that can be configured by the user, but my intent is to let my home automation computer know if the receiver is on, if the 2nd tuner is active, and things like that. I was hoping that Dish would have some way for integrators to access the receiver's state locally.

You talking about using Hughesnet? How old is your system?
As for using a home Media center style of computer to intergrate with you DVR. Dish doesn't have a software program for that yet. I have seen beta stuff(Project Draco, I think it was called) posted before about Dish coming out with Media Center support, but I haven't seen it go very far. Your 2nd tuner is always active, just like your 1st one is, if the Reciever is on.
I use Hughesnet up North in Idaho, and can use the the Sling/Dish remote access, but only in a oneway state. Sat Delay is still to long for two-way communication. The steps for setting up your DVR for remote access have already been posted.

Yep, HughesNet. I have a Flat Screen in the livingroom and most of the media stuff in another room downstairs. When we are watching TV, I have a Denon receiver that needs to be switched to another input and the speakers upstairs active. I haven't come up with a clean way to know what state the sat receiver is in.

Have you tried the remote access? You don't have to expose the receiver to the Internet for it to work because all connections are made outbound. That is, you don't need to open specific ports on your router because the receiver initiates the connections which allows NAT to work properly to allow the communications.

Even if you got remote access working through Dish's web site, that level of information is not available through that channel. The remote access lets you view schedules, recordings, and conflicts; schedule recordings and delete events; and lets you start watching a show. But it doesn't provide any feedback on the current operational state.

I'm not aware of any way to do what you want to do using the network port (but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.)

There are sensors available to detect a composite video output, but that won't do much good here since the output is always active, even when the DVR is in standby mode (showing the tips screen saver.) On my 612s, the RF output goes dead when the DVR is in standby, but on my 722 even that is always active, so an RF sensor probably won't help.

Maybe something LIKE THIS (http://www.smarthome.com/8013/Light-ProbeLinc-LED-and-Light-Detector-Probe/p.aspx) will allow you to detect the state of the front panel LEDs? There are a pair of lights to indicate when each TV output is active, and another pair to indicate when a tuner is recording. (At least they work in dual mode, I've not paid attention to what they do in single mode.)

While that's not exactly what you're looking for, maybe it helps suggest a different approach?

thanks for the link, something like that might work. Never could get the internet portal to work anyway. :-)
