View Full Version : I had a bunch of shows get deleted, anyone know why?
I noticed this past week that a bunch of old shows (more than a year old probably) on my HR20 had been deleted. I did not say to do this and am wondering how this could have happened. I was low on disk space a couple of weeks ago, does the HR20 automatically delete shows if it gets low on space. I don't think it should do this and it should just stop your new recording instead or give you some kind of warning if it is running low. Or is there some other glitch that could have happened?

Would be hard to know now, but how were the setting for the recordings setup?
There are settings for keep until the space is needed which may be why these were.

Unless you mark a show 'Keep Until I Delete,' it will delete stuff to make room to record stuff.
Review the HISTORY, you may find information on what caused the deletion.
It does what it is told to do. If space gets low and you didn't "protect" (KUID) a program (as part of the recording preferences or explicitly), the DVR will most certainly sacrifice it in honor of "record all episodes" directive.
Search the online receiver manual for the word "keep" and you'll find the answers. I'm betting the option you're really looking for is enabled with the blue button.

If I'm not mistaken, when you hit the List button and there is less than 10% of room remaining, it pops up a notice the space is getting low. I don't know if that's dependent on any particular mix of "Keep Until I Delete" versus "Keep Until Space Needed" or not, though.
Had you ever watched those recordings? If there had been a problem with the recording in the first place (blank recording/immediate "Keep" or "Delete" prompt), those problematic recordings can be deleted upon a reboot.
If you actually were getting low on space, it may have deleted the older recordings to make room for new ones you had scheduled.

Once it gets low it also puts a warning sign (exclamation point inside a triangle I think) next to the recordings that may get deleted if the DVR runs out of room.
The DVR always assumes you would rather delete old stuff in order for the new recordings not to be missed. You can override this assumption by using the Keep Until I Delete (KUID) flag. You can set this flag by hitting the blue button when you have a recording highlighted. You can also set all of your recordings to automatically set the KUID flag in the recording defaults. If all of your existing recordings have the flag set then it will keep them and skip the scheduled recordings until you have room for them.

Actually, the Blue Button KUID and the Series Recording KUID work somewhat differently. While the Blue Button KUID does exactly as what you explain, the Series Recording KUID will only protect a show from being deleted as long as the Keep At Most setting has not been reached. So while it will prevent a show from being deleted due to low diskspace, if it happens to be the 5th oldest show for a series and you record tonight's episode, it will still be deleted.

Yeah I forgot to mention the keep at most setting since I never use it.

Not sure how the HR series DVR's work when running low on disk space, but the R15 will turn on the ! in a triangle icon next to shows that are in danger of being deleted ONLY when there are enough shows in the TO DO list to cause this. (Meaning if you do nothing, they WILL be deleted)
Also remember, the live buffer needs some disk space. And I'm not a true believer that those DirecTV Cinema movies that are pushed automatically don't use any disk space reserved for customer use of their own recordings.

Those movies used a reserved portion you don't see.
Thanks for the info everyone, I was never quite sure what the exclamation points meant but have now found out the hard way. I will now use the KUID option for recordings.

As long as you realize that if you load up the DVR with Keep Until I Delete recordings that it can eventually run out of recording space and will no longer record new programs (not to mention you will constantly get pester messages when accessing your list).
