May I mount a HD HR receiver on it's side - or vertically -w/o having issues with the hard drive ?

Your concern should not be the hard drive, but heat management. Make sure it's getting good airflow so that it doesn't overheat, and you'll have no problems.

Yep, saw it at Chili's the other day as well. But I doubt it was an HR, but I know there are some out there like that.

Sure, not a hard drive problem, but you might have to rotate your TV to match the orientation especially if it is an LCD.
