I knew he was coming back, but I didn't really expect him to go to TBS.

Hmmm, that's an interesting network for him to choose. Late night cable shows are gaining pretty good traction though, especially when compared to the Daily Show, Colbert, and that crazy girl on E!... can't remember her name off the top of my head.

Chelsea Handler?
They are going after the young demo's (which is what he was after with the old NBC late show).....and basic cable is where many of that age bracket is going. Leno is still doing very well since his return to the Tonight Show

There was a nice discussion on Larry King Live about this tonight ...
Conan will be doing the show from LA. He will be able to rehire his former staff. He will be on cable where censors are not as harsh. TBS has 85%(?) penetration (US Homes). Fox would not have reached as many potential viewers. He will have the same budget on TBS as he did on NBC.
Yes, it is cable. But it is good cable. He should do fine.
Stewart and Colbert will be the cable competition ... but a different format. Record everything!

I saw the discussion on Larry King and they brought up some interesting points. I think it's a good move for Conan. The Office and Family Guy would be perfect lead ins for Conan's key demo.

Cool. Just wish we didn't have to wait 6 months.

"In three months I've gone from network television to Twitter to performing live in theaters, and now I'm headed to basic cable. My plan is working perfectly," Conan said Monday in a statement.

30 mill for nbc 10 pay someone to go. Cononan gets 30 mil, plus now is touring now and will have a new show in NOV.
is TBS going to add a 3rd and compete with nbc with 3 comedy shows?
will the max weinber 7 still be with Obrien?

The biggest problem I see... is that all of his lead-ins are going to be syndicated repeats.
I like Family Guy, for example... but I watch it new on Sunday on FOX... then I buy the DVDs when they come out... so the TBS repeats don't really do anything for me.
I understand being on FOX would have its share of problems as FOX doesn't really have anything in the 10-11pm timeslot, so local affiliates are running their 10pm news or other programming there... so FOX doesn't have the lead-in that ABC, CBS, or NBC does.
So, comparing TBS to FOX in terms of the lead-in audience... It is probably a wash. But he definitely won't have the same lead-in as if he were on one of the other OTA networks... and with CBS and NBC having their established shows against him... I'm not sure he will make it.

CNN's experts were saying Family Guy was the lead in for Conan ... but they couldn't remember if it was a half hour show or an hour and it turns out that it is a different show every night so ... not quite on the facts last night.
At 11:00pm Conan's lead in is whatever else is on TV ... it is a good time to change channels and many people do for their late local news or whatever else is on at 11:00pm in their market. They also change over for John Stewart at 11pm.
I imagine Stewart and Colbert get the "I don't watch the news" crowd ... and it is amazing (scary for older folks) how many people get their news from that hour of Comedy Central. Conan being friends with Stewart and Colbert doesn't make it easier - but if Conan's show stays with a "late night talk" format it will be a good option and not a replacement. Better sell some DVRs!
I hope TBS does the 2am rerun as they do with Lopez ... that will help with some time shifting. Stewart and Colbert have a late rerun as well ... the daytime reruns have more words removed.

Seconded, since having DirecTV on the West Coast means Conan's show will be on at 8:00 for me. That obviously has the potential for DVR conflicts with prime-time shows on the over-the-air networks (I already have the occasional conflict with two other shows I want to record being on at the same time as "The Daily Show" and/or "The Colbert Report," but those of course have copious repeats).

But there was one truth they could not spin, one fact that no amount of buzz could overcome. And it is the sole reason why Conan O’Brien is heading to cable: His television audience isn’t big enough for a major late-night slot in broadcast television given the current economics of the daypart. And it is for that reason— and only that reason—that O’Brien will debut on TBS this fall, and not on Fox or ABC. http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/451634-The_Reason_Conan_Really_Went_to_TBS.php
