Hello dear DBS enthusiasts,
I had DirecTV for four months now. (switched from Dish) All was OK until recently when I started to have an issue with at least one Russian Channel - RTVI on my D11. The picture freezes, goes into mosaic and such. There is no such issue on my R22. Also, R22 seems to pick up signal better in a rainy weather. It's possible, the leaves coming out on the trees may impede a signal a bit.

I wonder if D11 is generally weaker than other models at Satellite reception.(or I have a defective-refurbished unit) If it's an issue for all D11 units, which are the better ones?
Would you guys know if receiver may still be under warranty from DirecTV?...
Maybe I can ask them to replace for another model.

Thank you all in advance!

As the signal that your various receivers sees originates from the LNB (it is converting satellite frequency signals to a much lower frequency band), it shouldn't matter what the weather is like (unless your switchgear or cabling has gone south).

The typical diagnostic in this situation would be to temporarily move the D11 to where your R22 is and see if things don't improve. If performance improves, you've likely got a cabling or switch issue. If it doesn't, the receiver is probably going away.

Is your D11 buried in some sort of home entertainment oven?

Thank you for your reply. I already tried putting my D11 where R22 is at- it still would give the same picture freeze. So this should rule out cabling/switch.

My D11 is attached right on top of the 20-inch TV in the kitchen.(no entertainment oven :) ) I now wonder if EMF from CRT TV may have negatively affected the D11. (Dish network receiver was fine for 10 years though in the same spot)
I'd say Dish Network boxes were less troublesome than DirecTV ones. (My R22 also gives some problems time to time :( )

Thanks!

More likely your D11 was cooked by heat from the CRT TV and other warmth inherent in a kitchen. CRT's don't produce much external EMF but they can produce a pretty good burst of magnetic flux when the degaussing coil goes off.

However it happened, the D11 seems to be done.

The D11 doesn't seem to recover very well when the satellite signal dips to the point of picture pixelizaton. The R22 and other receivers seem to recover much better.

Your D11 could indeed have a less sensitive tuner. How do the satellite transponder signal strength numbers compare with those of your R22?
