hi y all i have been reading tenth of pages from the dishDVR forum , and i just came here in order to make up my mind (as I'm in the process of getting satellite Tv with PVR).

The first thing i have to say is that there seems to have as much unsatisfied customers on the dish DVR forum as there are satisfied customers down here !

so i guess that means i will have less troubles and bugs if i choose Direct TIVO.

But i still have some questions :

1) why any one seems to care about the communications fees, as apparently every night Tivo does the update from your phone line. At the end of the month that can be a pretty good bill !!!

2)i have SBC DSL, can i connect the Tivo system to my phone jack without putting it in troubles with my DSL service ??

3)can u take the Direct TV DVR option without getting Tivo , and still be able to record without videotape (i'm not into the thing that allows Tivo dialing my line evry night !!).

thanx for all the answers...oh and a last one , i've got a Phillips DVD recorder, is it possible with the Direct TV DVR receivers (and above all the Phillips DSR7000 one) to transfer your recordings from your DVR recorder to the DVD recorder ?

Thaaaaaaanx a lot for helping me .

Welcome to DBSTalk.

The DirecTivo/Tivo units use a local access number to upload the data. If there is no local number, then you can use a 800 number.

1) I'm not sure what you mean by "communications fees". Tivo does a nightly download via the dish. No phone line is required for this. The phone line is required for PPV orders and (I believe) to verify that the receiver is in the location it's supposed to be in. These calls are made every two to three days and they tie up the phone line for about a minute or two. I can't speak for everybody but the call mine makes is local, so no long distance charges. I believe there is also an 800 number it can call in case there isn't a local number.

2) I have no idea about this. I'm sure someone here will answer, though.

3) The only DVR that DirecTV offers is Tivo. You can use another stand alone brand but their monthly fees will be twice what DTV charges and you won't get two tuners. The receivers will also be much more expensive than getting a DirecTV/Tivo receiver.

I believe you can transfer recordings to a DVD recorder but don't hold me to that.

For more information you can go to www.tivocommunity.com and ask there. Just be sure to look through the FAQ's and do a search for what you can't find there before you ask any questions. There are some people there who get strangely upset when they see the same questions asked a lot.

You've made the right decision to go with Tivo. Do not - repeat, DO NOT go with any of Dish Network's DVRs unless you enjoy constant headaches.

Welcome to DBSTalk, Kony! :hi:

To answer your #2 question - you shouldn't have any trouble putting a dtivo on a dsl phone line jack, but you will have to install a dsl filter on that jack just like you would if you were to connect a normal phone to it.
