View Full Version : New Guesthouse Installation Question

I couldn't find an answer to this question, and so I figured to post my questions.

A couple months ago I had a guest house built from the ground up, but the construction guys (friends) didn't run cable thru the place. So now, I want to run cable in there to put one of my H21's from the main house in there so that when guests stay there they'll be able to watch what they want in the comfort of the guest house.

I've got a SWM out in the back of the main house, and I noticed that there are a couple of unused ports on it. So I guess all that's needed is for someone to come run some cable from the SWM on into the guest house.

The question then is, is this something I would call DirecTV to arrange for an installer to come and do? Also, will I run into any fees for them having to run the cable into the guest house? (By the way, I do have the Protection Plan on my account)

Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You could have anyone run a cable from one of the open swm ports on the splitter to the guest house TV room location. yes, there will be a fee for doing so. And no, the protection plan doesn't waive the fee for doing so. The protection plan only covers existing outlets, NOT the expense of adding a new one.

Make sure the run is done with RG6.

I believe they make direct burial RG6. If the small investment of a few tools, around $20, and the cable, you could do it yourself and have handy tools for future things. I bet someone will come along that knows more about the "flooded" direct bury cable.

How far away is your guest house from the main house?

The guest house is 15 feet from the main house, so not that far apart. I should mention the Dish and SWM are mounted up on the side of the roof of the main house, so I doubt this project would require burying the RG6. Then again, that's why I'm on here asking. Any info is appreciated.

That or the Yellow Pages.

Which part of Los Angeles do you live in? Someone here must know a good installer that services your part of town that could take care of you.

Actually, for this, you'd be better off getting a CABLE guy (as in Cable TV), and have him do an aerial run from building to building. Most sat techs won't carry the right cable or the hooks to do this, but it's what cable guys do all day long.

Try Craigslist...

If I am reading your signature line correctly you have 9 tuners you are already over the 8 outputs of a SWM.

I noticed the same thing:

HR22-100 - 2 tuners
HR21-700 (3) - 6 tuners
H20-100 - 1 tuner

SWMLnb limited to 8 SWM tuners max
SWM8 is expandable (with additional SWM8's in parallel.)

Did D* install all of your boxes (and SWM), or did you self-install anything?

Or maybe just using the term SWM as a general term for his non-swm multiswitch?

IF the guest house has its' own electric system and ground bond the correct procedure would be to install another dish and ground that dish to the electric bond for that building.

What you plan is not an additional outlet installation.

Anyone can run the underground cable (recommend within conduit).

Call Directv and set up the movers program for a dish and 1 receiver install at the guest house. Same property address, same account.:)

That could do it,

IF Directv interprets an additional structure on the same property as a "move."

While it makes sense to me you never know. As an installer I would insist on a full installation pay....maybe even try for a sales commission on the new customer.

The original plan will work but expecting someone to violate various electrical codes and spend a few hours doing it is worth more than the $30.00 offered for an a/o (additional outlet).
