I know this question has already been discussed, but I haven't been able to find the answer to my question. I have an Asus PB5 Deluxe MB (running XP SP3) with integrated ADI Soundmax audio controller. I get the dreaded "HDCP audio protected" message when trying to play any HD content. SD works fine. I have seen on this forum many references about trouble with the Soundmax, and no way to fix it. I tried all the usual stuff including switching off the digital (s/pdiff) outputs.
So I said the heck with it and bought a PCI sound card (Diamond Xtreme sound 7.1) which has a Cmedia chip installed it and disabled the integrated Soundmax via BIOS.
Same exact problem. Really disapointed. Also disabled digital outputs to no avail.
So, my question is what sound card can I buy that will work with the Asus PB5 Deluxe, Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Directv2PC (HD playback).
I saw in one of the posts that the Realtek chip has drivers that can handle HDCP but I don't know if you can buy a PCI soundcard that has this chip.
Thanks for any suggestion.
Do your Recording and Playback devices look something like this with the HD stuff disabled?

No, they don't. Windows XP only displays limited options on sound.

Your choice of Diamond Xtreme sound 7.1, which has a C-media chip, was a poor one, as they haven't yet come up with drivers with HDCP [I've got one to know].
"What you need to do is", get a cheapo sound card without digital output.
Last I looked Newegg had them for $10 or less.
If you sound chip doesn't have digital outputs, there isn't a problem.
XP [as you know] doesn't give you the option to disable "an output", just the device [all outputs].
Vista & Win7 give you the option to disable digital and leave analog active.

Thank you, VeryOldSchool.
I looked at Newegg but could not find a less than 10 dollar one as you suggested. Could you reccommend a specific one? I sure would appreciate it.

These are getting hard to find, but this looks like it will work since there are no digital outputs:

Either one "should work".
I didn't have any issues with the older SoundMax without digital outputs.
The problem comes with the early HD sound chips, with digital outputs. These are the one without good drivers for DirecTV2PC and HDCP.

I did order both Soundcards today and will post the results. I should have them in a couple of days.

Just as a side note, I ordered the two products from Newegg today around 11am and they already shipped them with an expected delivery of tomorrow (I only live around 50 miles from their wharehouse). Can't beat Newegg with a stick for their selection and delivery.

Thanks, VOS. I just installed the cheapo $10.00 sound card and volia! I can now play HD recordings. I installed the Sabrent card, and it was DOA. I took it out and intalled the SartTech card and it works like a charm. I don't know how many hours I battled this problem, and how simple the fix was once someone in the know told me what to do. Thanks again, I really appreciate the help.
