Yesterday our ISP came to Chris and made him an offer for a new server for us here at DBSTalk.COM.
Chris immediately contacted all the admins and asked for our opinions on the upgrade offer. Within minutes all the admin staff agreed the deal would be crazy to pass up. Chris then posted the details yesterday afternoon to our Gold Members for their thoughts.
While we did not get a lot of replies from the Gold Members due to last nights power blackout, however all the replies we received everyone was for the upgrade!
In order to get the server so we could move to it this weekend Chris placed the order for it this morning. It should be ready for us this afternoon, the actual move will take place over the weekend in the early morning hours.
This move would not have been possible without the support of our Gold Members! Our gold members have generously donated to DBSTalk.COM to keep us ad free the money they have donated has kept DBSTalk.COM ad free for the past two years, we were lucky enough to have a little extra money in the bank from our Gold Members in order to make this upgrade possible.
Of course this move has drained the account a bit, so if you would like to become a gold member please CLICK HERE (http://www.dbstalk.com/subscriptions.php) to donate. All donations go to support DBSTalk.COM and it's operations. The site is run entirely by volunteers so you can be sure all your money is to help keep the board running and ad free! When you support DBSTalk you are immediately given access to our private Gold Club as our thank you.
Now on to the technical side of things.
Currently DBSTalk.COM is running on a Pentium III at 866MHz, with 256 MB of Ram and a 40 gig hard drive.
After the upgrade here are the specs we will be running:
2.3 GHz Celeron
FSB 400/128 L2 Cache
512 MB DDR ECC Ram
80 GB IDE Hard Drive
Gigabyte Motherboard
Also our ISP will be upgrading our bandwidth limit from 30 Gigabytes a month to 200 Gigabytes a month!
On our current server with 256 MB ram we are running at peek times with CPU running at about 85% utilization, with memory up around 83%. With the new CPU and more memory this will ease this problem and also provide better service to all.
Because of the upgrade some users may have problems getting to http://www.dbstalk.com for a few hours. We will do our best to let you know our new IP address so that you can visit DBSTalk while waiting for your ISP to update its DNS records.
Over the past few months we have really grown! At peek times just a few months ago there would only be 100 people online, now come on at Midnight and you will notice we have 100 users online! So this upgrade is a blessing for all!
Again our thanks go to our Gold Members for making this all possible!
We hope you enjoy our new server onces its online!
Any questions? Please ask!
