I have been working for Mastec as a Lead Tech/Wild Blue/Trainer/ Installer for 4 Yrs. I have been tossing in my head about working Directley For dtv on there Home Services division. After Mastec changed ther matrix it cauesed me to loose my lead tech anyway I went to DTV and took my drug test the other day and I was just wondering did I do a good move or bad.

I've heard from our FOM that techs in the transitioned O&O markets are generally pretty happy with Directv as an employer.

I wonder who will make better employees....former techs who won't work for the HSPs or former installation contractors who have run out of stolen tech funds?

Or will they just start over with poor but honest peasants.

:)..........Always wanted to work on satellites.
:(..........Had it with burger flipping.
....... Now that I am out of the joint I gotta do
something.
:D..........You pay...I do!
:sure:......I get a blue truck and get into peoples homes...right?
;)..........

Could be fun.

Nobody ever put me on a scale  and I'm 6'3" @ 265lbs.

There is an OSHA weight limit for the 30 & 40 ft ladders.
If you can carry them and climb them there is no issue. I have seen a weight limit posted in ads they they say is related to the ability to do the job.

In my youth I worked for a roofing company and did watch a race. On two forty ft ladders ...two heavy but muscled roofers raced up ladders to a second floor deck. Each had a small but crazy college kid on his back as a jockey. Neither FG ladder broke.

Very interesting... DirecTV's site, in the careers section, says you must weigh under 250lbs to be an installer.

It's a good thing that I don't work for Directv then, isn't it?
edit: And also good that I'm not an "installer".

Not to be rude, but are you one of those QC techs that have never installed a dish in his life......... but you are going to tell me how to do it?? I've been installing for over 5 years now, and I guarantee that I have had all the classroom training you have had and more. I have to say, I knew absolutely nothing until I installed my first dish. I have alway thought that HSP's shouldn't let anyone that has not been a tech for a year or more hold any position higher. If not you end up like we are right now, getting told "you can't drill through carpet, lift the carpet and drill and put it back". Hmmm... nice theory unless the carpet is, say, held to the floor with tack strips and base moulding sandwiching the edge. If you have never dealt with picky customers, impossible installs, or the stress of trying to get all your jobs done and get home before 10pm, then you don't know this buisness at all.

 That's just rude.
I'm a service tech because I've been good at my job for a very long time.
BTW.. the QC stands for quit complaining :righton:

I am a roofing contractor. The 250 lb weight limit is based on having the ladder fully extended horizontally (flat for those of you in Rio Linda).

Never knew that,

You don't gain much altitude with horizontal ladders do you?

I also saw horizontal ladders with planks in them or plywood on top used as walk boards or scaffold floors. They never broke but considre: 1 heavy dude + one wheel barrow + tear off junk = way more than 250 lb. The owner just would not buy aluminum walk boards; $$$$$.

We pay $80 per drop.
We will drop ship materials to your home and take it out of your paycheck.
We work seven days a week.
We require a Superbuddy meter and a drug test.
No we don't supply a work truck but I'll lone you one for a few weeks.
We just got in 120 installs today.
If you make any mistakes you will be back charged.

The guy has called me twice wanting to know why I won't come to work for him,If you ask me the world has gone insane.

Is it because of the drug test?

Dave,

The "drop" is a CATV install term. It means the line from a pole or UG vault to the demark point near the phone NID where an installer would ground the system and connect (or provide) interior lines. To translate to satellite work this term COULD mean the dish to ground block line = $80.00.

The offer is crap.

It is intentionally ambiguous. What "mistakes" get back charged? How much for the loaner truck? So the materials are drop shipped...who pays the freight and how much are the materials.

The offer is crap!

Matt,

Good for you! You have met the same old junkie whore with new lipstick.

How about:
INSTEAD OF; We pay $80 per drop.
LOOK FOR "With appropriate experience and checkable references we will start you at $15.00 per hour. You will be promoted or dismissed based on performance after a probationary period."
INSTEAD OF; We will drop ship materials to your home and take it out of your paycheck.
LOOK FOR "You will be responsible for having a complete parts, materials and tool inventory available for your use. If you purchase anything we need a receipt for reimbursement. Draw materials from out warehouse when efficient scheduling allows."
INSTEAD OF: We work seven days a week.
LOOK FOR " We conduct operations seven days a week. You are expected to accept a full time schedule (40 hours) and be available for reasonable overtime as needed. ( OT = 1.5 x hrs over 40 / 2x hrs for weekend, holiday & mgmt requested)
INSTEAD OF: We require a Superbuddy meter and a drug test.
LOOK FOR: " You are expected to use reasonable care with the company provided $800.00 Superbuddy meter.

The rest is to vague to comment on but you get the idea.

Drug test?

No we don't supply a work truck but I'll lone you one for a few weeks.

To clear up a few things $80 per drop means 1 room or 4 rooms pays $80.

I have a $700 Superbuddy,a $400 Birdog and $140 Suunto compass/inc,also have SBCA cert,All Dishnetwork certs,All 2010 Wildblue certs,Hughesnet installer ID and cert. also the Drug test won't be a problem (almost expected now days) but he was very pushy and wanted this test right now! (I'm sure most looking for a job wouldn't have the $700+ for a SuperBuddy meter and with the drop ship materials being deducted from the paycheck this job sounded like you would owe your soul to the company store.)

I hate contract work but the last company I worked for did the 60-20-20-10 payment system $110 for a 4 room install and supplied all materials for the job, after working this job for 4 years my work van rear axle failed and after being told they would do right by me they did everything but plus reduced my hours to the point I couldn't make ends meet anymore,No way I had the money to replace the old van or fix it.

This guy just wants to take advantage of people desperate to find a job,Guess the job I'm looking for doesn't exist right now/anymore

40-50 hours a week,$12 hr,company work van and a real pay check on Friday.

This guy rubbed me the wrong way from the start,I figured when he mentioned 110 new installs today that the easy 1-2 room stuff would go to the installers he likes and the new guy will get all the 4 room/crap jobs.

Going to spend Friday looking for greener pastures,Brewster Company in Knoxville TN was bought out by DirecTV only problem is I don't have a clue where they are located and Internet searches have not helped me in this endeavor.

Matt,

I figured that was how it would roll out.

Tennessee Earnie Ford knew of which he spoke:

Another day older and deeper in debt
St. Peter don't ya call me 'cause I can't go
"cause I owes my souel to the company sto..

Why don't ya sign up for one of those jobs where ya carry the customer out of the moving van or pick up the silver lid on the receivers?...at least ya get a cool blue shirt.
