Are the VOD movies listed within the EPG downloaded to the receiver via Ethernet or instant like when ordering PPV.

Downloaded, not instant.

VOD is downloaded over satellite when the receiver is in standby mode so any title listed can be watched instantly.
DISHOnline (not VOD) must be downloaded over ethernet be fore you can watch.

Exactly...

The channel 1/501 movies in the EPG are already on your DVR... so those are instant view.

The ones in the Dish Online menu have to be downloaded after you place the order.

That is good info thanks. Another question is....how does the VOD movies reside on your hard drive. Are they compressed as not to take room from your hard drive. I would imaging that it must take up some space in the HD limiting your quota for your recordings.

There's set-aside space for them, that does not impinge on your capacity.

That used to be true... Now it is kind of a mixed bag.

I believe the 1/501 VOD are still stored in the "reserved" area of the hard drive so those don't count against what you are shown in "space available" on the DVR menu.

BUT... if you order a Dish Online download movie... those DO take up the user space, and you will notice your available time/space go down as you download a Dish Online event.
