OKay so i am moving to a new home. i usually do all the wiring myself but i don't have time. will they run the cables in the walls for me? i have a couple of flat screens and want them to have the cables run into the closets and i will run the hdmi cables to the tv's behind the walls. hopefully i can get the new deca ird's. i am in the bay area ca so maybe might get them. they have to go into the attice crawl space to do it.

thanks

Fishing cables is not part of a standard installation. If you know exactly where and how they can be run, then do some home work and at least make it easy for the installer. You might still have to pay extra. Lay it all out for him.

Wall fishing is custom work, and more difficult fishes will cost more. Also, any outlet going to a location that doesn't have a receiver will be pure custom charge. Finally, the installer may refuse to do the install at all if you don't have all of your TVs and receivers on-site, as the potential for charge-backs to the installer is very high otherwise.

That's the best we can say without a lot more information about what you want.

thanks for the replies. i will fish the wires myself then. hard to find a custom installer in the bay area. they just don't like messing with directtv for some reason. i tried about 2 years ago to have it installed and couldn't find anyone who would do it.

It's not DirecTV they have a problem with; it's DirecTV *customers*, who tend to have an expectation that everything "should be free", and if not free, then dirt cheap. The same folks who wouldn't blink at paying a plumber $600 to replace a waterheater or $200 to an electrician to swap out a breaker will freak out about paying $75-$100 for a wall fish, because "DirecTV has free installation!"

The sat companies have so devalued the installation in the eyes of most customers that fewer and fewer people are even willing to deal with satellite anymore.

I know a lot of people in the satellite industry who are just waiting on the economy to improve a bit so that they can get out and do something else. The demands and expectations of installers increases every year, as do the hassles and frustrations, while pay and support from above continues to decrease. It if wasn't for the bad economy that has caused techs to grab on to their job and hold on for dear life, the turn-over rate for techs would probably not be sustainable.

Very true. I've noticed that the tech churn has slowed to a crawl, especially in the last year. I feel like I've gotten into the life boat, and I'm bolting my butt to the seat.

i guess i can see that. i have no problem paying but it is dam near impossible to find any installers out there. that is the reason i had to do it all myself in current house. directtv just wasn't a clean enough install for me. guess i will just have them install the dish and end the runs in the attic. i will take it from there

When I move last summer I cut the holes in the drywall and installed the outlet boxes, and then drilled the holes from the basement up into the walls. I then took metal clothes hangers and stuck them in the outlet box, and down through the hole in the floor to the basement.

When my installer showed up he had no problem doing the wall fishes for me since all he had to do was tape the coax to the hangers and then pull the wire up through the wall outlet. I just had him run the wires extra long and put the compression fittings on them. After he left I then went back through and cut the wires installed the keystone jacks and wall plates, and hooked everything back up. He didn't charge me anything because it wasn't really any extra work for him.

Where (what city) are you located?

I've had a few customers do that over the years, and like your guy, I was happy to do it without a charge, since nearly all of the work was done already. Most sat guys aren't unreasonable, but they also can't afford to do 2 extra hours worth of work for free when they could be doing another job in that time that makes them an extra $50-$100.

Yeah, that's pretty much what he said. It was actually less work for him since he didn't have to mess with drilling his own holes and fishing the wires up from the basement through the floor/carpet into the rooms himself. Not to mention I helped him run the wires and told him not to bother with clipping them up to the floor joists because I was also going to be running a second RG6 line for OTA and a Cat 6 line and I would just clip them all up myself when I was done.

The Directv installer will probably do it, but it will cost extra.

And I don't think they'll just install the dish and end the runs in the attic, unless you have receivers and TV's in the attic.

They need to hook everything up and make sure it's working.
