View Full Version : 508 & outage - hard drive crash after first timer triggered?

Hi, I've had a 508 since March and have had great luck with it until now!

Yesterday, after the power outage (I'm in Michigan), I hit PVR and had 5 hrs remaining so I deleted 6 events to free up space.
Then while watching live TV, I a timer fired up so I turned everything off except the 508.
Today, I turned everything on, hit PVR on my remote - I had 31 events but it showed at the bottom of the screen that I had 60 hours 15 minutes of available record time.
I tried selecting an event and couldn't. Every event appears to be corrupted.
I called tech support who read off their diagnostic chart that all I could do is to delete the events and reset the box.
I asked to speak to advanced support, they told me to unplug the receiver, turn it back on - still the same problem. The advanced tech indicated he personally hadn't had any other problem calls regarding the outage and problems with the hard drives. He said I probably had a hard drive crash and they would replace the 508 but I would no longer have the 1 year warranty, I would only have 90 days on the new receiver.
When I expressed concern, he recommended I delete my events, then wait and see how the box performed -- I have up to next March to replace the receiver.
I was able to hit record, stop, and playback a show and set a timer which then triggered, recorded, stopped, and I could play back normally so the 508 appears to be working.

Any ideas on whether I should replace the receiver or whether I should "try" it for awhile? (I still haven't deleted the events because it still kills me that I lost them - I never appreciated how it feels until it happened to me!)
So what happens with the warranty - do I really lose the ability to have an extended warranty on the new box? Do I stop paying for the warranty since I wouldn't have one anyway?

As I mentioned, I loved my receiver up to this point but it is amazing how quickly things change!!!

Thanks in advance for any advice! Jenifer

Or is it possible I may have hit something while the event was recording that corrupted it and all the other events? I have noticed the 508 since the last software upgrade was particularly sensitive when recording - hitting guide then cancelling sometimes corrupted the current event that was recording..

For the future, I had the 508 on a surge protector but sounds like it really should have been on a UPS since reduced power can cause problems also?

Sorry, I'm probably dredging up a lot of topics that have probably already been beaten to death on this forum but it seems like I've run into so many of the issues in my one incident :) If you can point me to older postings that address these, that would be fine..

I believe the CSR was wrong, Reman receivers do have a 90 day warranty but I believe the remainder of your 1 year warranty transfers to that replacement. Worst case scenario is buy the $1.99/mo. warranty you will then be covered after 30 days.

I would keep an eye on it and do as boba suggested, it might be alright now.

By the way....Welcome to DBSTalk. :)

Put it on a UPS, so minor pwer problems dont affect it.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on it and also definitely look into a UPS.. I do have the $1.99 warranty so if I do have to replace it, I'll insist on the full warranty on the new receiver.. Thanks for your advice - I'm glad this forum is here!
