View Full Version : Ordered SWM5 LNB, splitter and power inserter..few questions
HI all. I decided I was tired of 4 large bulky wires running from my dish into my house, so I decided to order a SWM5 LNB for my slimline dish, and the 8 way splitter and power inserter. I have a few questions. Once I run the single wire from the dish, I assume that I will run it into the power inserter and then into the splitter. I will then run single wires from the splitter and leave the unused splits terminated. Is this correct so far? Then as far as I understand, all I have to do is remove the B band converters, do a red button reset an each of my two receivers (an HR21 and an H21) and they should recognize the SWM setup on the reboot and correctly configure themselves. Is this correct? Thanks for your help in advance. Is there anything I am missing. Do I have to set anything up manually in my boxes?
I plan on completely removing two of the wires coming into the house and using the second wire of the pair to run my antenna using the RG6 directv cable (currently my antenna wire is RG59 and I think ill get a better signal with the RG6, and my antenna is right by the dish)
Thanks

Looks like exactly what I did about a year or so ago and then when I moved again to our new house. Do that and you will have success!! :) Follow that instruction to a "T" and you'll be good.

I did something similar too! now with my new house, I have a hill in my way of the towers, go figure.
ok thanks webby...since nobody else replied, i will assume that everything i said is the exact way to do it.

It's one way to do it. You can locate the Power Inserter at any receiver location if you like (e.g., if you have a UPS somewhere), as long as you attach that receiver's coax to the splitter's power-passing port (well marked, and it's red).
I would go through Satellite Setup again just to verify all is correct.

thanks dwcolvin. itll be just as easy to place the power inserter before the splitter as it will be near a power outlet and i can attach the power inserter to a wood beam and tack the wire to the beam in the basement. then it wont clutter up behind any receivers upstairs. i should be able to place the power inserter BEFORE the splitter right?...just run the SWM line from the dish to the inserter and output of inserter to the splitter input?

Yes, that will work.
The reasons to have the PI at a receiver location are
1) there's no AC outlet at the SWM splitter; or
2) you UPS your DVR(s), and want to plug the PI into a UPS

As long as it is easily accessable. Power cycling the SWM is one of the troubleshooting steps.

I don't see that anyone has corrected you that you would need to go into your system setup->satellite setup and change the switch type field from "Multiswitch" to "SWM". That should be the only setting you should have to change on the receiver itself.

thanks jason. that is the kind of info i was looking for. should i make the change prior to actually connecting the new equipment? or wait til everything is connected and then go in and change it and then reboot the boxes? it looks as if i should do it after everything is reconnected.

You're correct, do it after everything is connected. You won't have to reboot the receivers. When you set it to SWM and then select "continue" it will go to "Verifying installation..." and it will force it to download your programming guide again giving you a progress bar that counts up from 0%-100%. One of my 2 receivers did say "Due to changes you have just made, your receiver will now reboot." But my other one that didn't still worked fine without a red button reset. If you attempt to make this change before installing all the hardware, it won't get past the "Verifying installation..." screen. Good Luck!
thanks jason. i plan on doing it next weekend.
id like to thank everyone that helped me...did the changeover this morning and outside and inside install looks SO much cleaner now...i have a few questions about the power inserter...if the power inserter craps out, will the box still work on the odd or even transponders whichever one it is set on when the inserter craps out, or will the box black out? how reliable are the power inserters with the direct tv logo on them? should i keep an extra one on hand? how reliable are the SWM LNBs from WING? also, i notice that on tuner 2, i get SLIGHTLY lower signal levels than on tuner one...like 1 or 2 lower for instance when one transponder is at 95 on 103 or 99, it might be 93 or 94 on tuner 2. is this normal with SWM LNBs? also, when i do signal strength, i have a new "satellite" called SWM...is this a general power on the LNB for each satellite at once?
Thanks in advance for the answers.
The PI and LNB has to be decently reliable, think about the millions that would have to be replaced monthly if they were junk. It is always good to have parts on hand :)
If the PI goes out, the whole thing goes out.
That "SWM satellite" shows the strengths of the individual channels. You actually have a 9th for communication between everything, but it can't be used for a tuner.

1: No, none of the boxes will work without the power inserter.
2: Havent heard of any power inserter problems to date.
3: Wouldnt hurt. I use a UPS to power the system.
4: Connectors/coax could be the reason, slightly lower gain on that SWM channel.
5: SWM shows the output of the 8 individual SWM channels in use.
5: SWM shows the output of the 8 individual SWM channels in use.
well if that is the case, i get 0 on one of them, 100 on three of them and 95 on the other four. is this normal or is there something maybe wrong with my new SWM LNB? is this signal strengths on the 8 satellites they pick up? does it mean that something is wrong on the one that says 0??

The SWM signal strength is related to each of the transponders the SWM is tuned to. Unless you have 8 tuners each tuned to a different transponder, seeing a zero would be normal.

ok thanks bob....actually on mine there are 9 readings, 3 of them are 100, 5 of them are 95, and one of them is 0. so this must be normal. thanks.
