If one obtains the receiver independently from DirecTV via Solid Signal or elsewhere who does the installation? Can I still call DirecTV for installaiton and just tell them I already have the equipment or must I contact local installation service?

Yes, but they will not install it for free, and if you open a service call trying to be sneaky, the tech will most likely cancel your call and tell you to order an upgrade.

If you lease an IRD from a retailer, your expected to install it.

The website says "Directv Approved", but since I've never heard of them, I can't vouch for them. Their prices look very similar to Solid Signal, which I can vouch for. Are you trying to locate a particular item?

yes, they got the SWM-16 with power inserter and 2 splitters for about 40 dollars less than solid signal
